Check through the existing threads on here, the Auris is very sensitive on fuel and more so on the SR180.

for a 1.6 i was expecting a bit more than this and i was driving like miss daisy as well,be better off with a 2.0 audi a3 or something, dont think this will be a long relationship iam afraid.......

This is way TOO LOW MPG for a 1.6 petrol. Check the service record and see when the last full service was. If recent service has been done, just check the air filter.

If the car is running ok then try disconnect the Battery for about ten minutes and re connect, this reset the ecu which can help.

Check your tyre pressures are up to the mark.

If the car is new to you then maybe a trip to the dealer and complain loudly about it.

isnt the 32mpg figure you quote for the last of the 32 miles you did on the a road ? is that how the trip computer works or am i missing something ? if you leave the trip on average mpg for all the 32 miles you travel its going to go up and down isnt it ? even if i keep a steady right foot the mpg seems to go up and down on my 1.6 sr on say a motorway

I've not done a mpg cheque for a while - Filled up a few days ago and just refilled earlier tonight - done 130 miles took 2.60 gallons so i make that 50 mpg - - - over the moon with that, think I'll need to do another check cos the few previous checks were 40 mpg.Hope I'm right. Oh and btw I'm in a 1.4 petrol.

here's the way i calculate this - litres / 4.54 = gallons then miles / gallons = MPG

Petrol price 1.269......disgraceful!

Please check your on the right consumption meter, I'm guessing you have the same dials as me (if they change?!) which gives you the option to see both average and instant mpg. I would recommend resetting the average and testing again, but remember you will use a lot more petrol whilst the engine is cold.

right guys had a word with dealer while i was in getting brakes/rear light done under warranty, told them i was getting a poorly 32mpg,not a problem was reply, it went on diagnostics and reset ecu to factory spec ,i was shown graph which explained that previous owner was driving on gas ,off gas, on gas ,off gas , full throttle or naff all and ecu learns drivers style and adapted to that ,so all reset now so i will update you in the near future of mpg figures.so sandy52 your spot on with the ecu reset.starting to enjoy forum as there seems to be more and more people getting them.thanks to all for respones to question after question being a newbie.iam sure i will calm down in a week or twenty.

I've been writing posts asking people to reset their ECU's from their drives for some time now.

It is well worth it if you have fuel economy problems. But couple it with specific driving techniques.

Don't need to pull the Battery leads. Just pull ecu-b fuses from the fuse box in under the bonnet, pump the brake till it goes hard and wait 5 mins. Replace and continue.

Just for information, why do you need to pump the brake pedal?

I'm sure there is probably a good reason, but i can't work out a logical reason for it

From what I have read before disconnecting the Battery leads, & pumping the brake pedal once or twice ensures all the energy left in the cars electrics are drained so the ECU memory bank gets a full reset erasing all the memory so that when its restarted it re-learns the values from scratch.

Fair shout.

I've never done that, although i normally leave the Battery disconnected while i wash and hoover the car, so its gets plenty of time to discharge.

As an electronics engineer I know how many issues a "hard reset" can fix on any electronic gear... however... if the ECU adapts to driving style, why has it not adapted to yours ? Also if the car were using more more fuel than it should in a "straight line" then what is the "closed loop" engine management system making of all that. To overfuel an engine by that amount would perhaps give other symptoms... that energy has to go somewhere... and if it's as unburnt fuel or a poorly combusted mix then the cat etc would be suffering which in turn would/should show on an emissions test. Maybe warning lights too.

I think the only true test is a before and after average done over many miles and several tank fulls, not just what the readout says on the dash.

I have noted and posted on here that my 1.33 "appears" to give significantly better mpg on the dash readout at a given speed after taking the engine up to the red line for a few seconds (This is particularly noticeable after a lot of "carefull" driving).

Whether the actual mpg is better or just the readout recalibrates I can't say.

Started a thread about a faulty fuel gauge but it seems to me by reading this it might relate to my problem, Ive covered 100 miles and use half a tank of petrol, real crap I know so Ive took fuse out for the ecu and will go from there, I think this idea of a ecu remembering the way you drive is stupid, I mean what if more than 1 person drives the car, does it remember how the 2 drivers drive..Bit pointless, So I filled the tank up and will have to see how I go, on the range indicator it is saying there is 300 miles worth of fuel in the tank and at cost of £70 odd to fill it up it dont get you far..By the way is there any difference between supermarket petrol and say esso, heard a few stories on supermarket pettrol never know who to trust with what they say.. my auris is the 1.6 tr by the way.

Without getting into an argument, reset of the ECU every year or a few thousand miles can only do the car good.

As you already maybe aware computers get a little slow after a while, erasing the memory clears all the old data and allows the ECU to re-learn to your driving style, this may give you better MPG if you are trying to make the car learn a certain type of driving style in your case reset it and drive economical & the ECU may return better MPG quicker

When I bought my Auris the car on the average trip said 36MPG now its 41+ after a reset, try it you have nothing to loose. Although mine is the 2.0 diesel

Supermarket fuels are known to be cheap because they dont use additives as say Shell or BP, iv read somewhere before they all come from the same refinery its the tests etc done by the fuel companys where they add there own treatments to the fuel. I personally have always stayed away from supermarket fuels because I usualy like the peace of mind, but if your replacing your fuel filter regularly you shouldnt have a problem. There is always arguments on the fuel topic.
