Yaris 2011 Comfortdrive 1.3 Vvti Vs 1.4D

Hi to everyone,

I am a new buyer of a Yaris, I have decided I will buy it in the next month. I live in Continental europe but my wife is american so she needs automatic (comfortdrive) !

Now the question is, should I get the 1.4D or the Petrol/Gasoline 1.3vvti? In both cases brand new cars.

I tested the Diesel, it feels ok but I am worried about only 90hp, on the other hand as the engine gets more torque/par at low regime, it is not difficult to drive in the city.

Will the petrol be much better with 99hp? The torque/par apparently kicks in much later (higher enginme regime), so will it "die" when driving in a city at low speed?

I will mainly use my Yaris in the city (20 km/daily( with some weekend trips (200 km max/weekend). Honestly with the mileage I make, consumption is not a real concern.

I am more concerned about getting an acceptable response from my Yaris in the daily life. Did anyone tried both and can compare?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

Juan

If it helps at all, the 1.4D is faster from 0-60 than the 1.33 so I don't think you need to worry about it having 'only' 90BHP.

cant you arrange a test drive in the petrol version.thats got to be the best way to make a choice.

a petrol i think would be better for city use.

With turbodiesels the HP/PS/kW rating is a bit deceptive as they have much more torque in the low-mid range than petrol engines which makes them surprisingly punchy.

For low-mileage city driving, the petrol would be the better option tho'; The extra cost of the diesel would take a long time to make up, and with the diesel D4D engines you need to them on fast roads semi-regularly.

If it was only ever driven around town, various bits of it (EGR, injectors, etc.) would start to get crudded up and there'd be a gradual performance loss until they get cleaned out.

My only concern is the MMT/semi-auto Yaris are known for being pretty terrible unless you always drive very smoothly with no hard acceleration (or, I'm told, if you only use it in manual mode  ).

It tends to run the engine at much higher revs than I'd expect, and if you accelerate even it bit hard (e.g. overtaking), the gear changes can be quite jerky; They may have fixed this in the 2011 Yarisses but the only car that I've heard them fixing the problem is on the latest Auris firmwares.

The diesel is slightly nicer to drive with the MMT gearbox than the petrol; I guess the extra torque and heavier flywheel stop the gear changes being so lumpy.

Let us know how it goes :)

Or teach your missus to drive 'stick'

"My only concern is the MMT/semi-auto Yaris are known for being pretty terrible "

That's a more accurate description and applies however driven. I had the pleasure of driving a VW Polo with their DSG box on Monday and the difference between that and the MMT was chalk and cheese. More or less silky smooth instantaneous gear change at the right time without the loss of torque and speed. Toyota need to take a few tips from VW on how to do it!

The MMT6 has to be used in manual mode (M) on a motorway or dual carriageway unless the desire is to drive at 75-80mph in E at which point 6th gear might be engaged automatically. I'm told by Toyota this is correct. To stay within the legal limit and if 6th gear is to be used then M is the only option.

The dealer sorted all my Yaris dash rattles yesterday under warranty  - lower passenger side glovebox, passenger airbag, instrument surround and front of dash attachments to below windscreen. The radio volume can now be reduced to a more civilised level.

I had an Aygo Blue for the day - my thoughts on that :censor:
