2002 1.8 Vvti Starting Problem

Hi All,

I've a 2002 1.8 VVTi Avensis Estate which I bought with a running problem which I thought I'd need to change the engine on. The car would run, but very lumpy and was burning oil. Compression test revealed no compression on cylinder 3. Thinking it would be a piston ring, I took the head off to investigate, and there was a big chunk out of one of the valves (looked like pac-man!). I cleaned the head, replaced the valve, all the valve oil stem seals, head gasket, head bolts, spark plugs and Battery, and put everything back as it should be.

First turn of the key produced not a lot, turning but no firing. Thinking I'd probably upset the immobiliser, locked the car, unlocked and tried again. Car turned over and fired - excellent! Then 5 or 6 seconds it died. Thought it might be short of fuel, so put more in so it could drink properly, and it did the same thing, and it's still doing it! Not sure what I need to do - it seems like its fine and going to carry on then just splutters and dies. Next start up is fine (not like injectors are clogged or anything), and runs great for those few seconds!

This is very frustrating! I feel so close to getting her running properly but theres's just this tiny detail of not running for more than 5 seconds!

Hi mate,

whats the compressions like now? Does sound like fuel starvation to me but it could also be electrical, will it rev up in that first few seconds? Sorry to be so vague.

Sounds like the immobiliser might be cutting it off?

like bestseany said. My last car used to do this if I put the spare key in that did not have a chip, and thereby not re-setting the imobiliser

My problem is I only have the one key...any ideas on how I can get the immobiliser to recognise it for more than a few seconds?

is the immobiliser/security light going off? definately sounds like and immobiliser fault if the keys is ok ? it can also be the immobiliser coil around the ignition also check the fuses
