Diesel Engine Limp Mode - Help A Friend

Hi All

I have had problems with my Previa going into limp home/safe mode over a number of years with code 1251 coming up.

Apparently this code indicates a turbo problem.

The main dealership have never got to the bottom of this and after reading posts on here I am not sure that they will

I am reluctant to spend out more on this fault. I have read of people having the turbo replaced only to have the same fault code coming up after a while. also people reconditioning/repairing the turbo and having the same result

I am sure this is an inherent problem on at least Previas and Ravs that is causing owners a lot of money and which is not being cured long term.

The problem presents huge safety issues, as I know from my own experience (overtaking on the M5 in the middle lane and suddenly in limp home mode)

I am on a mission to find out the extent of the problem amongst owners.

I am wondering if it is an Engine Management Technical System fault rather than an engine parts problem. It can be 12 months between the limp home mode happening with no action taken in between. Surely if the turbo had a problem it would happen much more often.

If you have come across it youself or on here please let me know.

Also has anyone heard of people selling their cars because they were unhappy/couldn't get to the bottom of this problem.

We may have a recall situation here!!

Thanks

On the MPV section I found this plea and seem to remember a few posts of similar nature here. Any of you guys able to help out with some suggestions?

Apart from my known love of oil-burners, the Previa I have is the first series.. and not the second series front mounted engine like what his is. The post is perhaps relevantt in the RAV section as well ..so I have entered it here rather than shoving it in the general discussions..seeing as its car specific. (This explanation for moderators).

in order to act we must to understand what does it mean as this code. my opinion is that the turbo work is controlled by:

- air delivery pressure;

- vacuum sensor;

- temperature sensor before cat converter.

if an air delivery sensor gives a signal it means the turbo has the below:

- sticking in the bearings (lubrication/cooling issue);

- vanes flexibility blocking by carbon deposits (injectors issue);

- vanes controling issue from the lever side;

the low air pressure might be caused by an air by passing between an air and gas side and wise --in such a case the issue is connected with seals or even in housing where the seals are mounted. besides a gaps between an impeller and suction housing cover is important otherwise the air will not be compressed due to by passing again. in other words each issue with turbo must not be explained by general explanations but must be deeply investigated. our task is to find a reason of this issue. if the 2.2 diesel is equipped with turbo -- this means either power lose must be deeply investigated from all sides: turbo performance; filters; injectors etc.

Cheers/Igor

The code appears regularly.

Did you try searching?

My Rav seems ok in this department, however, I do have other equipment that seems to go into 'limp' mode from time to time! I find a dose of Viagra soon sorts it out though! ;-)

  • 2 weeks later...

my RAV D4D 2007 has just started losing power obver 2000 revs. Toyota first said turbo probs.

Charged me 105 euros to clean the EGR valve and the butterfly unit body. No change. now say its the injection pump.

Suggested sending pump to the Denso dealer in Alicante where if replaced it would cost 1250 euros. i said stuff it and took the car back. I am considering getting a pump repair kit and replacing the two SCV`s.

Any comments anyone ?

I was having the same problem ie 1251 - turbo overboost . After reading all advise on here decided to go with scv's after stripping down and cleaning egr and Vac sensing valve made no difference. Car then ran loads better but would hesitate at 2500 rpm and again go into limp mode , funny thing is code changed to indicate turbo sticking closed . I then decided to give turbo a closer look so took the 2 bolts out of the vane actuator (thing that looks like the wastegate). When that was loose i moved the rod up and down and could it sticking slightly so i gave it a good old manipulating up and down quite hard to try and free it up and also greased the linkage . Anyway upshot is car runs like a dream - free revving through all gears with no hesitation , no limp mode and i swear it's quieter as well so seems i had 2 problems one masking the other.

Hope this helps

Only one SCV on a 4.3. Does it store any codes?

Hi

My 05 Previa diesel started with turbo probs. Luckily the last time I was a mile from the dealers and got it on the diagnostics. was told the code was stating the stepper motor in the turbo. Do you think its shot at or should I look into anything sticking or blocked oil pipes etc?

Dealer qouted £1300 to replace so I thanked them,smiled and left.Can get a recon for £360 !

Fuel filter???

Hi This is tranq updating my 17th Feb post about power loss on my RAV4 diesel.

Turns out it was a fuel filter but not the standard filter in the engine bay.

There is a coubik filter inside the petrol tank and this is what had blocked greatly reducing the fuel flow.

My fault because I was transferring fuel from drums to the car using an old piece of garden hose. This had been out in the sun and so had grown some sort of algae inside the tube. Pumping the fuel released bits of algae from the hosepipe walls into the fuel tank.

Lesson - ALWAYS use a funnel with a fine filter when transferring fuel.
