Sudden Increased Fuel Consumption

Hi

03 Avensis 1.8 VVTi ( the 200-2003 model if that makes a difference). I have had this car for about 18 months and always averaged about 33-34 to a gallon and about 37 on a motorway journey but suddenly mpg has dropped from 34 to 28. Could this be a faulty air temperature sensor or are there other possibilities? I have some longish journeys to make soon and I need to afford to be able to come back! Any ideas about this will be gratefully received. No warning lights indicating any sort of engine management malfunction.

Check the air filter, spark plugs, then put the tester to see if there are differences between the temperature recorded by the MAF and sensor coolant temperature.

My old Mondeo started using more fuel when the front caliper was sticking a bit. Go for a highish speed run (60mph or so) and then stop lightly and touch the middle of each wheel to see if any are really hot.

Also, check your tyre pressure and make sure that it isn't due a service.
