Avensis Rear Brakes

I have just stripped my rear brakes down to have the disks skimmed, but can't remember which way I should put the new pads back - is it with the wear indicator (the metal strip) on the inside of the car (nearest the piston) or on the outside? And therefore at the top or bottom?

Hopefully this will sort out my brake pedal travel which seems to have got really low recently with completely worn out pads.

How much friction lining is there normally on the hand brake shoes?

Finally, does anyone know if a fabric mesh dog guard designed for a Corolla, will fit an Avensis. I assume the fitting is the same, but is the size?

Any help much appreciated,

Andrew

The wear indicator goes on the inside and if I remember correctly, it goes to the bottom side of the caliper.

Thanks,

I have now fitted the brakes and they are much better. I looked carefully at which way round the wear indicator should go and eventually decided that it is best if the tab goes at the top of the caliper - this way if they ever did get that low the tab would simply bend up out of the way rather than bend back into the pad and potentially wreck your disc. I am pretty sure that is the way the old ones came off too.
