Induction Kit!

Bought my Pipercross induction kit last June and i loved the noise and the wee bit of extra power! Anyway, wos driving home from uni the other day and on comes a warning indicator light on the dash(it wos a wee orange coloured thing)! So i wondered wot it wos so i checked the handbook and sed is wos a warning indicator light and i should take the car to my nearest dealer! Not being defeated i checked the oil but it wos fine so i didn't have any idea wot wos wrong! Phoned up Arnie Clark and explained the story and they sed they would take a look 2moro 4 me! So out came the induction kit (didn't want 2 void my extended warranty) and I took it in the next day! Took it and waited about 4 a bit and finally a guy came out and sed I have a faulty airflow meter! I sed thats fine and i have booked it in 2 get a new 1 on Friday! The guy explained 2 me that the fault wos caused by the airflow meter having not the right amount of air/fuel mixture! It wos gonna cost me £136 if i hadn't of extended my warranty!

The thing i'm wondering is, wos it my induction kit that caused the fault or wot? If it wos can i not get the airflow meter reset wen i re-fit my induction so that it thinks its always had that air/fuel mixture?

Hope i didn't put u asleep with my story! Things seem 2 be goin from bad 2 worse with my wee Yaris!

I have no idea wot this means.. but I can't imagine the induction kit being the culprit. So many cars have them fitted - even a lot of Yaris owners.

Possibly a dodgey fitting of the kit? Or a dodgey airflow thingy itself.

it was most certainly caused by the induction kit

it's a very very common problem, and it's derrived from oil on the filter.

nearly all manufactureres (except blitz who claim to offer the best filtration with metal filters... even though they're very poor) use an oil to coat the filter to help trap the dust and other small grimeys that try to sneak into your engine.

this is always a danger with induction kits, the only way around it is to get as much of the oil off the filter as you can before fitting it under the bonnet.

Over time the oil gets blown onto the MAF sensor and blocks it up so it can't take an accurate reading, when this happens the orange warning light comes on to tell you something's wrong...

can be quite costly to fix, although some MAF's can just be cleaned up if you're lucky!

Oh yeh, how did everyone get on with their Apexi's? any more bulk buy offers in the pipeline?

most people have suffered this on the yaris and its just the airflow meter being bitchy

i wouldnt have thought any damage is being made and dont pay for a new AFM cos itll only do it again!

So wot should i do? Clean the AFM, get a new 1, just leave the warning light on? :help:

They have been dispatched from Japan, so should arrive soon and then I will get them sent out to everyone who has ordered them. If there is further interest I will be only to pleased to run another group buy. I am planning to stock these in the future for one off purchase but they will be at the £120 price.

Thanks

Kevin

give it a quick clean, then to turn off the light just unplug the ECU and plug it back in

instead of unplugging the ECU, can you rip out the Battery then put it back in?

err its easier to just look under the glove box, pull the plug out and stick it back in, rather than !Removed! about with the Battery!

Wos gonna start a poll but couldn't be bothered!

So wot should i do, re-fit my induction kit and clean the AFM every couple of months (don't know wot that involves, so please tell) or leave it off and have a quiet, slower Yaris?

:wacko::help:

piperx induction kits dont come oiled! they do however come with a spray can of oil, which u r meant to use before fiitting the induction kit!

so in other words, u dont av to oil ur filter!!!

i believe the reason y ur air flow meter messed up was coz the ecu was not recalibrated...

wen fiited an induction kit, (as said above) you should reset the ecu, to do this just disconnect the possitive Battery lead for about an hour or disconnect the ecu (i would leave it unconnected for an hour, so it losses its memmory).

after u reconnect the above, wen starting the car for the 1st time, DO NOT touch the throttle for the 1st 20 secs as the ecu will be meassurin how much air its gettin...u may find the car idles a bit rough but after about 20 secs it will smooth itself out.

hope that clears things up.

Thats complete tosh.

There is no need to reset the ECU when fitting an induction kit, all you are doing is allowing the engine to breathe easier, your not adding any extra air.

It's the oil that caused the your AFM to go walkabout, get an Apexi.

and i thought an induction kit helped by ADDING MORE COLD AIR

and yes i personly would av thought that u wouldnt need to reset the ecu coz in conjunction with the air flow meter it should messure how much air there is and then work out how much fuel is needed etc etc

but i have only said that as iv heard it before, and becides, u wont die if u dissconnect ur ecu for 10 mins, or leave ur Battery disconnected for an hour will u! :P

If you don't oil it you will bugger your engine not just something easy like sensor. The oil traps the dirt the wholes are to big otherwise.

Just question about ecu - how do you get to it? Do you remove the glovebox or simply stick head under and can see.

Thanks

I think you stick your head under

ok, fair enough about the oil, BUT I NEVER SAID DONT spray ur piper x cone, i was just stating the fact that it didnt come pre oiled! :P

as for where the ecu is situated in the yaris, im not sure, i would gues in one of these places...engine bay, drivers/passengers foot well.

but if ur askin, as u want to disconnect it, so it losses it memmory, well just disconnect the Battery for an hour, that will do the job

How are you ADDING more air??

an induction kit is less restrictive than an original air filter box! it can suck more air into the inlet manifold! (because its less restrictive (theres no box arround it restricting the amount of air it can suck in!))

an induction kit is much more efficient! but u must make sure it has a heat shield and cold air feed!

exactly!

how can an engine be breathin easier (with an induction kit) if its not suckin in more air?

either its more efficient or it aint!

and u av said an induction kit allows an engine to breath easier!!!!

he does have a point nws25!

I do question that an induction kit is 'much more efficient' than the standard boxes...

I've seen many examples of induction kits that actually DECREASE efficiency due to bad design sometimes, but mainly due to the fact that car manufacturers have become much more savvy about air flow these days!

try improving the BMW M3 intake, nigh on impossible! :hokus-pokus:

I find induction kits a tacky fashion accessory these days, they have a purpose on evo's, imprezas and skylines (amongst other highly tuned vehicles)

but the 1.0 - 1.2 bridage is just amusing really! makes alot of noise without going anywhere fast
