Ecu Update

I have been informed by my local Toyota garage that I need to have an ECU update, and new glow plugs fitted.

Are the two things related?

Does the ECU update calibrate the engine for the glow plugs? Or, is the update a separate issue to the glow plugs?

(I have been told that I need to get new glow plugs and the update because of the VSC and TRC and Engine Management lights being on.)

Glow plus is totally separate chapter.

you need Ecu update because of VSC and TRC.

Cheers.

The ECU update you have been recommended may not necessarily be for the VSC TRC. I have exactly the same issue with mine, and I have found out that the ECU software was updated March 2007 in connection with error codes P0380 (Glow Plugs) and C1201. As far as I know the update reduces the sensititvity of the ECU to the glow plugs, and prevents these lights coming on unnecessariy. There is a Toyota Technical Bulletin for this ECU update listed here:

http://www.toyota-tech.eu/TsbResult.aspx?TsbCategory=C604BA3A-5AB0-4714-8E81-3674AE9B76FB

Scroll down to the one entitled:

DTC P0380/C1201-Glow Plug Failure 03/01/2007

You have to be a regestered user to access it, I regestered (free, but you pay for hourly access if you want to download documents) but it said that the file was unavailable...

Of course, your lights may well be coming on for genuine reasons. And the ECU update you are being recommended may be different from the one mentioned above, so check with your Toyota dealer to confirm.

Hope this helps

Simon

My car hasn't seen the inside of a toyota garage in years. Is it possible to tell if my car needs an ecu upgrade by chassis number? Is there any point if everything is running ok?

Mark as Simon mentioned that ECU update decreases the sensitivity of glow plugs, so think yourself. Do you really need update on your car.

Mr T would charged you 30 minutes labour charges which is least. Only in exceptional cases they offer free diagnostic when you visit them first time (to make you customer). So if you are fascinated by new ECU software, go and try one of your local toyota dealer.

ECU part numbers which required updating are:

89661-0569# (not sure if the # refers to "any other number"??) and only if they have a calibration ID below 30534600.

If calibration ID is above this minimum, it dosn't require the update.

The new ECU part number = 89661-05692 which doesn't require updating (I guess regardless of calibration ID).

Hope this helps.

And how do you check that on your car?
