Electric Mirrors

now i will probably get shot down for this BUT i have one thing on my new 2006 Rav4 thats really really bugging me, its the Electric Mirrors, every car i have ever has been VW so you could fold them with the key fob, now i know the toyota does not do this however have to have the key in the ignition to do it is really bugging me, every time i pull up out side my house i remove the key before pressing the button, i know its silly but its really bugging me, is there any modification i can do to either make them fold when i lock the car or at the very least work with out the key in ?

any help will be greatly appreciated as i'm driving my wife mad with this.

Welcome to the club.

I think it is just a matter of use but if you are determined enough that promlem isn't insurmoutable. You need a permanent feed and a simple 5 pole switching relay but shcm will probably tell you exactly which wires to splice and where to put the relay.

.....and if shcm does indeed have a modification, he knows that the weather up here is absolutely gorgeous, the bed and breakfast is half price at £78.00 pppn....he can come see us any time.

I would love them to foldificate off key fob too.....

Sorry, I've been busy.

Personally, I'm not sure there is any ideal functionality for this, so I can see why they kept them manual, but admittedly I haven't thought through every eventuality.

For example, when my RAV is squeezed into our garage, I want to fold the mirrors with the engine running going in. However, I don't want them to fold out @ ign on as they will fold out (not completely) into a set of ladders on the garage wall.

It probably really needs two buttons, or a three positon switch - fold in , fold out and auto.

Anyway, here's a few suggestions/alternatives.

Mirror retract control looks fairly simple, I expect it just reverse switches the motor connections, but it is not fully shown:

You could get a relatively easy permanent Battery feed up close to the mirror switch connector, by doing this mod:

http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=95836&view=findpost&p=873989

Provided you are OK with a permanently live cubby box accessory socket and you don't drain your Battery by leaving stuff in it.

The the power feed is on pin 8 (grey wire) of the mirror switch connector, so you could then just remove the existing permanent feed from pin 8 and jump a new bat feed across from the accessory socket to the mirror control connector.

mirrorcon.png

I expect there is no quiescent current with the mirrors in either folded or out state, but it is something that should be checked with an ammeter first, otherwise you could potentially increase the current drain on the vehicle bat with the vehicle idle. As drained batteries are a big whine on here, I don't want to introduce more drain problems.

If I remember correctly, the window lift is still powered after ign off for about 2 mins. Another solution, might be to take a feed of the power windows, that way the mirrors will still be active for a while after ign off, but it will stop any problems with current drain (if there actually are any - needs to be checked). Expect existing fusing will be OK, just don't use everything together (as a precaution).

I think the correct feeds for window lift is one of either IA pin 1 (pink) or IA pin 19 (blue) or IH pin 2 (blue) or IH pin 11 (blue) on junction box behind the glovebox, but I haven't checked this. This would need a bit more wire routing.

For £78 I would also expect some racial abuse about the English thrown in too please :D. (I hope you are feeling better by the way, Dave.m too ).

Could probably make 'em fold off the key fob, by using one of the CDL control signals to trigger a little bit of circuitry. That would take a tiny bit more thought............

Aye....ye must be proud, Anchs....he is coming on a treat and is bordering on knowing what he is talking about. Charge for B & B now waived, and weather 28 Centifibs.

Fibber - there is no thermometer in your land that has ever read so high! A rain gauge that says 28 cms, yes :yahoo:

shcm, thank you for posting that diagram.

Using two relays I manged to automatically retract/fold the mirrors when I shutdown the engine.

Here are my findings:

Mirror switch connector configuration are as follow:

Pin 10: to mirror engine

Pin 09: to mirror engine

Pin 08: +12 V with ignition / GND without ignition

Pin 07: GND

All other pins are related to mirrors settings (Up/Down Left/Right)

The mirror engines consume 1.5A and they auto-disconnect them self from power when mirrors are fully returned and/or fully retracted(folded): this means that a constant +12V is safe.

My implementation is as follows (I cut the 9 and 10 wires and connect each one to a 12V relay ) :

mirrors.png

Green wire is from the lighter switch: When the ignition is ON lighter is powered, relays are closed and the mirrors are controlled by the console button as before (the existing button behaves normally with the ignition ON - this will fix shcm's issue regarding folding in the garage wall). When the ignition is off the relays are open and the mirrors are disconnected from button and constant 12V on pin 9 will retract/fold them.

P.S. if the mirrors are returning instead of folding then switch 12V red from pin 9 relay with GND from pin 10 relay.

The mirror engines are working as follow:

Fold: Pin 9: +12V Pin 10: GND

Return: Pin 9: GND Pin 10: +12V

Or vice versa! :D. You could easily measure/test that.

Welcome to the club Alex

That is really useful information, especially as I was in the process of ordering a ready made module from Singapore.

Any chance of some photos and a 'how to' guide with a list of parts?

I know of at least one other member who would be grateful..............

Ok, I will do some pictures in the week-end and I will describe in more details my implementation.

The relays that I've used are these ones from here: http://www.sinequanon.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=42_127&products_id=75

As you could see the relays have 5 pins exactly as in my diagram, so only things to do is to solder the wires on relays pins exactly as I've described above.

I found on forum references to some japan/chinese modules that are doing this on door lock/unlock. I consider this a big disadvantage as I don't want my mirrors to fold out every time I unlock the car (maybe I just want to get something from the car). Another disadvantage is the price payed for those modules.

The main disadvantage of my solution is this:

While the engine is starting due to large amount of power consumed by the starter there is small period of time when all other electronics are shutdown. This will lead to short delay in folding out.

You could see bellow my mirrors in action:

Well done - 3 posts and deserves a star already :toast:

Next bit is to get them to rotate down when you put the car into reverse for easier parking.
