Servicing Help

Hi guys, i appreciate this is a mudane post but i have some questions if you could answer please.

We've only had the car ~8 months and it requires a 'FULL' service having previously had an intermediate service at 40k miles. Hopefully someone can answer please.

The car has covered 50K miles now. We didn't get an owners manual only the service book, there is some info in their but i have some queries still.

As far as actually changing items/checking...

1. Oil&filter = 5w40 fully synth diesel oil? 3.5L for a change?

2. Is a 3rd party manufactured oil filter okay?

UNDER ADDITIONAL REPLACEMENTS/INSPECTION...

3. Fuel filter should be changed at 40k?, would it have had it replaced at its intermediate at 40k?, thus no need at this moment in time as it every 40k miles?

4. No timing belt change?

5. Valve clearances, can these be adjusted on our D-4D and worth doing on this service?

6. Should i change the gearbox oil and brake fluid?

Anything else worth noting?

Thanks

I have a prior model D4d so read my commenst in that light.

5-30W semi synthetic appears to be standard Toyota use.

I always use a Toyota filter . Why save £3 and have oil drain away problems leading to low oil pressure at start up?

The 40k interim service is only oil and oil filter. Look and see if it looks new. I changed mine diy at 40k.

It has chain, not timing belt. Auxiliary belt is run until it looks cracked job - 100k plus miles I suggest.

Valve clearances? Nope. OHC. Do not touch.

Brake fluid: change every two years. So change.

Gearbox oil: Every 50k ? . I did mine at 40k.

It may be worth removing and cleaning EGR valve- do a forum search. Carb cleaner job. 45 mins ... Mine was not too bad at 40k but I cleaned it anyway.

Change pollen filter (under glovebox) if fitted.

Check brake pads and rear linings. Remove rear drums and clean out dust.

Grease all hinges.

Check antifreeeze- good for 10 years if pink LongLife.

Check power steering fluid if not electric power steering.

Preventative:

I repaint exhaust with heatproof aluminium paint.

Dinitrol/waxoil all under car brackets showing signs of rust.

Clean insides of alloy wheels and check for wear of tyres.

Examine front calipers and strip and clean/copperease if showing signs of dirt/rust/squealing.

Check anti roll bar bushes.

Check balljoints and wheelbearings for play.

Hope that helps.

If in doubt: Toyota dealer Pinkstones in Stoke discount oil when bought with filters. Others may do the same. Your local Toyota dealer should advise on oil spec and service details..

Edit: I found the service staff at Pinkstones exceptionally helpful and your local dealer should be similar...

I'll jump onto the subject, as my Yaris is 2009 model and have it since August 2009. I live about 300 yards from Irish Sea so my problem is salt corrosion. I try to rinse the car underneath every now and then while I clean it but I don't always reach all the parts of exhaust etc. Would you advice paiting the pipework and all other parts with the aluminium paint, since it has already some rust spots and other little marks on it? Is it advised for the whole section or only up to the cat.converter or so?

I just run a wire brush roughly over exhaust rust to remove flaking stuff and paint pipes and boxes and especially welded seams...I have also used it on son's 1.0 Yaris exhaust manifold but it gets so hot the paint lasts 3 months and then flakes off...so a waste of time.. I sstop at the cat largely because to paint it you need to remove the undertray on mine and I can't be bothered to do so...

Thanks for your input Madashfish

I asked about the oil filter, as with my S2000 there are reports of 3rd party ones not being as good.

Regarding valve clearances, do you mean never adjust them? what do you mean by OHC. On my Honda i do it myself.

How easy it to change the oil myself and oil filter?

Thanks

Overhead Camshaft = OHC. Valves.

100k mile job.. and then only to check..

Oil and filter change? I do my own.. On the Mark1 Yaris d4d there are two small access hatches in the undertray - one for oil drain plug and one for the filter.

Access is poor if not on ramps /pit.

You need a filter strap to remove the filter as not much space and often tight. I use a kitchen jar top remover - rubber strap... (don't tell my wife!).

In reality, if you are semi competent at diy - it's very easy.

I was there on Tuesday last and would totally endorse that.
