Brakes Again!

Hi,

It looks like my brakes (all disc) will now need bleeding - is there a suggested order or procedure for this?

In the manual it says DOT 3, surely DOT 5.1 is more suitable?

(Struggling without a Haynes Manual :help: )

Thanks,

Andrew

As long as you dont mix dot3/4 with the Fully Synthetic stuff, you will be ok.

I normally start with the o/s/f, n/s/f, n/s/r, o/s/r.

Dont forget to top up the master cylinder - otherwise by the time you get the o/s/r - the level will have dropped far enough to suck air in and you will have to start over.

You might as well change the clutch fluid while you have the bleed bottle in your hand (often overlooked)

I learned, start at the wheel furtherst form the master cylinder. Then work your way back to it.

Mick24 has a good point, stop and make sure the resivor stays full. All it has to do is get low once, suck air and you have to start all over.

In the U.S. they sell vacumm pumps that you can hook to the bleeder screw, pump it up and it sucks the fluid from the master cylinder through the lines. Kind of nice, just have a buddy on top filling the master cylinder and you pumping the vac-pump. When you see no more bubbles coming through the line out the bleeder screw, that one is done.

Thanks, I will take note.

Regarding that DOT 3 fluid, is it correct that Toyota used DOT 3 in the first place as on a 2001 vehicle I would be amazed that they used such a low boiling point fluid, especially as DOT 3 was mainly discontinued a couple of years back?

I can't answer your question. But I would call Toyota and ask them what to use.

No offence to others or myself, but I would not take the word of someone off the web for something as important as what fluid to use in my brakes.
