Diagnostic Code Reader Usage

Hi

Thinking of getting a code reader to identify high fuel consumption problem - never used one of these gadgets before. What level of detail do they show-is it in english or is the display just a set of code numbers that you have to decipher via internet fault code lists i.e. will it show the operating parameters such as cooling water readings and inlet air temperature etc?

Is there a best type to get and is there a particular protocol to look for on a 2003 1.8Vvti any good sorces for these other than Robfords, sorry meant Halfords.

There are two types really - handheld which range from displaying only the common "P" prefixed OBD2 codes only, but not manufacturer specific codes, e.g " C" prefixed, with no other information. More expensive handhelds do all codes regardless of manufacturer, plus tell you data about engine rev's, temp etc at the time of logging the code. This is known as freeze frame data.

Or you could buy an OBD2 cable and hook up your laptop, there is free software available from the net. With this software you can do all sorts of things to interrogate your engine, the cables are cheaper than the basic handhelds in most cases, but you then have the hassle of lugging the laptop out to the garage.

Currently PMA motor factors in Dorking are offering a Sealy (or it might be Draper - forget now!) basic handheld for around £50 - or there is a U480 universal handheld available on eBay for approx £25 - I don't know the functionality of each though.

Hope this helps

Simon
