Strange Whining Noise 2007 Petrol Xt5

Hi Guys,

had the xt5 for a week now and enjoying it, a really nice car, lovely to drive and doing exactly what I wanted it to do.

Thanks first to this site for making my choice a little easier.

Only concern I have is there is a strange whining noise coming from underneath, sounds like a transmission whine when the car isnt under load. It disappears when pulling.

Is this normal?

Or do have I a problem, going up to Scotland soon so dont want to damage it.

Cheers

Chris

Have you run over my wife?

Hell, yes, going there is a serious problem. Just read some of the recent posts from that lot here. They are as mad as a box of frogs up there :yahoo:

Might well be the tyres. Check them for pressure and listen to see if the note changes on different surfaces.

  • 2 weeks later...

Oldgimmer,

I have the same noise from my 2007 XT-r, thought it was coming from transfer box/gearbox, after a million warning lights came on came on for check this, check that, oil temp to high, I took it back to the dealer as I'd only bought it 6 weeks earlier and thought I'd ask the question about the noise and was told that it was quite normal. Apparently they do whine a little, similar to the exhaust noise that sounds like it's blowing, again, this is standard on these and just the noise they make. Not completely convinced though the technician seemed to know what he was on about.

Thanks Dave,

hopefully all is okay, tried the tyre pressure as suggested by Anchorman and when found they were at 42 psi instead of 32 psi thought he'd cracked it. Unfortunately made no difference. Bit scarey that the car had just come from a main service with main dealer who state all tyres and pressures checked okay.

Cheers

Aye - tyre pressure guages are rarely calibrated.

Any problems whilst up here then theres a fair handfu of chaps willing to help a fellow RAVver. What area of Scotland are you going to? Its snowing up here the noo, ye ken.

Was up your way on Thursday picking up a dog box for the Rav. Going to a cottage between Portpatrick and Stranraer. Hoping for a bit of snow but doubt if we'll get any there.

Thanks for the help offer.

Cheers

Chris
