Our 54 reg diesel Corolla Verso has started being difficult to start some of the time. It juders and the engine management light comes on, then eventually does start and us fine. Took it to usual garage and typically it behaved. They did however hear a slight noise in the starter motor and think it is this with the underlying fault being the DMF.

They haven't charged us and sent us away as said it is really expensive and they wouldn't want to do it unless necessary but did feel that is what is going on. Asked them to price it up and they said £1630 for Non Toyota parts and £1870 with Toyota parts, for DMF, clutch and starter motor plus 5 or 6 hours of labour (£80 an hour). Nearly passed out and am just about recovering !

It's done about 80k. We were wondering about trying to source the parts ourselves and either getting them or someone else to fit them but are feeling a bit clueless . Any advice gratefully received. Many thanks.

I'd get a second and third opinion if I were you.

Maybe see how much you can get for it as a trade-in. On Autotrader your age and milage Verso seem to be fetching £5,000 to £5,500 so you should be able to get about £4,500 against a different one. Add the two grand you will not be spending on the repair to that and you have a about £6,500 to replace the car. Unless of course you feel it is worth investing £2,000 on a car worth £4,500.

Thank you both. We've decided to get a second opinion as only being able to hear a bit of noise in the starter motor and not have heard it in action does make us feel they hopefully have it wrong. It is driving perfectly apart from this starting problem

Have a read of my experience with a similar problem. Had to leave the car down there when it was cold just for it to play up. (it never did otherwise). They diagnosed a faulty starter motor and replaced it. It has been much better since, but now has been diagnosed with an oil leak - which explains something i've been telling them for some time. Rather a lot of money to see to this oil leak (£2500), which they've said they'll do under warranty(?) 5 years warranty they said, but when i bought it, it was only 3 years. Hmm!

I'm too honest. I rang them up to query it. Apparently, oil in the cooling/expansion tank is a bit of a known issue for which Toyota GB have extended the engine warranty up to 5 years on a case by case basis. Still a bit edgy about this though...

Had someone else look at it and they thought DMF failure so it went to usual garage today. They took the starter motor off and poked around, depressingly is the DMF. Gutted but that's life I guess.
