How Many Faults Are There In My Satnav?

A number of posters have recently complained about faults in the satnav maps and the cost of updates.

Does anyone know if a complete list of the faults is available anywhere and how many of them are fixed in the latest release?

I would suggest they are not faults but simply out of date maps. Roads change all the time with roundabouts, a change of turn priorities etc. I bet they are too numerous to count.

Sadly I guess they only way to cure the problem is too indeed buy the updates

OK, how long does it need to be out of date before it becomes a fault? In the short time I've had the car, I've found an M4 approach road that is marked as 'No Entry' at both ends and in fact, as far as I know, has never had 'No Entry' signs and has been carrying hundreds of cars a day for over 20 years. I can't believe there aren't many similar examples across the country. I'm afraid your last sentence is true, but my worry is that if I buy the update those 'No Entry' signs will still be there.

It is also a bit feeble for Toyota to argue that it isn't possible to keep up with minor road changes. My computer virus protection gets an update of new virus information every day. Why can't the same be done for satnavs?

It can. Buy a Tomtom.

Maybe because your Toyota isn't connected to the Internet every day ?

The smart thing for manufacturers to do is to deploy a proper sat-nav suppliers software and/or head unit and let them cope with all the update issues - as some do ... bespoke sat nav with hard drives or DVDs are so last century !!

I've seen the no entry signs too.... They appear on every exit of a roundabout that you are not to go down on the route you have chosen.

If you are approaching a roundabout under or over a motorway and you are not going on to the motorway, all entrances to that motorway will have no entry signs on them....

That's what I've found anyway.

As far as updates go, my cars are usually 3 years old when i sell them. I've had 4 cars with toyota satnavs now and have only found one 'mistake' and that was the two roundabouts on the A1 that have been replaced in the last 2 years, they are still on my old gen2 satnav - i've not tried the one on the gen3 up there yet....

I would reiterate what i have said on other threads, satnavs are for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools.... What did you do before satnavs arrived?

What did you do before satnavs arrived?

I carried a shoebox full of A-Zs, and tried to refer to the one precariously positioned on my lap while simultaneously peering hard for street signs.

The crippled, out-of-date Toyota nav system is preferable to that, of course, but still no match for any current Tomtom or Garmin unit, no matter how much we kid ourselves.

Notice from your profile that your Prius is 'on order' - have you got it yet?

We all have our preferences for satnav's, mine is not to have a removable one! having had a car broken into just for the radio - and again 2 weeks later for the replacement (which wasn't there as we hadn't replaced it) I have no intention of buying anything that could in error be left in the car, or leaves evidence that it could be in the glove box... Having to clear glass out of the car is not funny

On the Gen 3 Prius how can you find out what date sat/nav is fitted to the car? I have been assured by the dealer that the sat/nav in the new Gen 3 I have ordered will have the latest up to date sat/nav. I will need to find out if it is the latest one.

push the map button on the left hand side of the screen.

When the map is displayed push info and it will give you the map version, the gracenote version and the amount of space left on the hard drive as a percentage.

If you're referring to the A57 roundabouts at Worksop and the Little Chef, then yes they are still on the Gen 3 map (2009-2010 ver)

No, not that far up - I'm talking about the two south of the A52 not sure of the exact location as we only go up there a couple of times a year, due sometime in the next month or so I think

My wife has an ebook reader that can link to the internet through any wifi hotspot it finds or through 3G. Cost of the whole thing including the 'for life' internet connection was £152. They obviously hope to get the money back through book sales but there are hundreds of free ones to work your way through first.

Yor're right about the No Entry signs but why did they block the main route to the motorway that the satnav was taking me to? I happen to know the arrangement and ignored the satnav but a stranger would find it very confusing when the satnav says one way and the signpost says another. Which do they believe?

Got lost…………blamed the wife for not reading the map …………..big argument ………..threaten divorce…………… kiss and make up

when I first got the Gen 3 went on a trip to Scotland and noted the many mistakes of the sat nav system, incorrect Towns and directions, reported this to Toyota who asked for me to supply a video of the sat nav, spent hours recording problems and etc and sent off to Toyota. Today received a letter to tell me the new system sat nav was available at £160...I asked if all the incorrect Town names had been corrected as per the video supplied....answer didn't know would get back to me....waiting and waiting............!!

I think the original response of Toyota was utterly ridiculous and would have been very annoyed if I had received it. When a customer has gone to the trouble of reporting a number of faults the least they should get is an apology, followed at a later date by a letter saying whether the faults have been corrected and if not then why not. Toyota should then have done any further investigation they felt necessary in their own time and at their own expense, not get the customer to do it for them. Have you thought of sending them a bill for your time? Make sure it comes to more than they want for the update.

Agreed. No manufacturer should be asking a customer with a legitimate complaint to do their fault-finding for them. That's pathetic.

Ultimately whilst Toyota supplies then there are only effectively two companies that create them. And they are used by all the various companies.

Sure there could be algorithm mistakes, but again that system is made by fujitsu and Toyota buys it in. Not excusing Toyota but just highlighting that there are a number of organisations involved in the supply chain.

There can be a whole raft of reasons why a road is blocked. Not least also the lack of updates on rds-tmc as I have noticed a few times.

I wrote a big article about this nearly a decade ago that was published on pocketgps. It was new in the Uk but existed for years on the continent. Nothing much has changed really.

The thing is it is an aid. An aid that takes multiple sources of information and current telemetry especially on built in systems with speedpulse linked with gyroscope in order to make decisions. I have had it many a time where I thought to know better only to be stuck in traffic or roadworks etc.

But u fortunately all systems for some weird reason suggest weird things. Both inbuilt and pnd. My favourite is to exit motorway to just enter it again.

hmm, not the sort of things you are saying that were the faults reported...basically the voice over on the route was giving totally different names of Towns and Cities, some of which I have reported before on here..like Warrington was being pronounced as Wolverhampton and Wednesbury AS WEDNESDAY........yes I am aware that the systems are provided to Toyota by other companies but Toyota are responsible for the system sold at a vastly expensive price!!...they have still not confirmed that the problems have been sorted on the latest release but have made an offer to reduce the price to upgrade.........still waiting for someone from Toyota to give assurances of the problems and until will not upgrade even with a promised reduction.

  • 4 weeks later...

today had a call from the Customer Services concerning the upgrade to the sat nav system..the upgrade does not contain the amendments that were sent them, the explanation is that the upgrade was commenced before the video I sent to them, so as a consequence I will not be upgrading this year.

Yes, that sounds exactly like Toyota. They screw up, as in the 2009 Weasel Warranty and the Satnav update mess. Then they use it as an opportunity to charge for fixing the problem, while telling us that they are acting in response to our concerns.

Only if it looks as though the business will suffer badly, as in the Great Brake Fiasco, do they do anything for existing customers.

Why do sane people pay the silly inflated prices for manufacturer installed Sat navs when they can buy a very good Tom Tom or similar from Tesco for £100 or so.

less chance of theft with the built in and more features linked to the car, like voice activation for example.

What's the latest discs for the satnav? Guessing the 2007 car i pick up soon will have very outdated maps!

My Auris came with the TNS 410 as a "free extra", and the integrated TomTom's technology is about 5 years behind modern sat-navs, i.e., it reflects what was up-to-date when the car was being designed. No lane assist, photo-realistic junction views, text-to-speech, etc. Map updates were cheap though - only £37.48 for this year
