Engine Oil - Choices?

Hi all,

I'm looking to drop the oil out of my T180, I've got a new filter ready just need to get some oil now...

From the manual the recommended grade is 5w-30.

Can anyone recommend a brand? I'm guessing Semi synthetic is acceptable...?

Thanks in advance...

Tom

Tom

Make sure you add some Molyslip. Makes a big difference for the sake of a tenner.

all best

Shaun

Will do Shaun - Cheers!!

Not wishing to contradict, I wouldn't use any additives to good quality oil - they should already be in. I use Morris's 5W30 semi synthetic but any of the branded oils will be OK.

I'd use Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30 (C2 spec) Has yours got a D-CAT fitted?

I agree with anchorman. Don't use any additives in the oil. It just isn't needed and can sometimes have the opposite affect.

If you going to use an additive anywhere, use it in the fuel. Some Forte/Millers Diesel clean or better still is BG244, but thats expensive stuff. But I've found it to be fantastic.

using moly slip in a petrol engine can cause sticking exhaust/inlet vales, found that to my cost in my motor cycle engine.but must admit that was 50 years ago (where has the time gone).

mind you they may changed the spec of it since then to cure the problem.

I used Millers 5W30 semi-synthetic for my first oil change at 3000 miles. Since then I've moved to Morris' ( based in Shrewsbury ) on Anchorman's recommendation. Fantastic outfit to deal with - I ordered a 25L drum at 14.00hrs one afternoon, it arrived the following morning at 10.00hrs and the price was better than Millers who are local to me! Kingo does a good deal on filters if you buy them in a box of 10. You could even split a box between members if you live reasonably close together

I would go along with Anchorman and leave out the additives. As far as Morris oil is concerned, I have used it almost exclusively for nigh on forty years and with both old vehicles and more modern cars. The Shrewsbury-based company offers the most amazing level of advice and support which I much valued when trying to decide what to use with an old Bristol, Alvis, or Bentley whilst their modern lubricants and other motoring products seem to be of the highest quality and competitively priced.

thats me shot down in flames lol. I have used it for years in all my cars and the results are great. The Ravs engine was quieter esp on tickover and the mpg went up. On my Nissan Navara, it was using oil. Once Molyslip was added the oil level dident drop.

I guess they have their uses in some applications but in a very modern RAV engine with sensitive EGRs and particulate filters I wouldn't risk adding to any by products and in any case it should be as free revving as any engine currently available - if it ain't broke, don't fix it principle!
