Diy Clutch Rav4 2.0 Vvti Petrol

Hi all,

Only just joined this forum so go easy on me.

As per the post looking for info on how easy it would be to DIY the clutch on my wife's 2001 2.0VVTi petrol

I have spent quite a bit of time researching through the site and found a number of posts from Anchorman and a few others on doing the DMF and clutch on the diesel, but cant find much on the petrol.

Is it as big a Job as the diesel?

Does the engine need to be dropped or taken off mounts and angled as per the diesel?

Fairly competent DIY'er and have taken on shock and spring changes, wheel bearings, a Turbo swap on a VW TDI, Rad swap, timing belt. Also do most of the general servicing, oil changes Brake discs & pads etc on this car & my audi but not wanting to bite off more than I can chew

Thanks for any help

Gavin

the petrol is just as involved as the diesel subframe down etc box and transfer box down as 1.

not a job id do at home and not a job id do without a ramp and ive worked at camerontoll toyota for over 6 years.

youd be better taking it to a garage..

also the box is very very heavy and not much room under the car for two people if its up on jacks

Thanks Ormi, Was kind of worried that might be the reply.

Cringing a little at the 8-10 hours or so labour charge for the change when the car is only worth around £3k. Always pay for servicing and work on my other weekend toy, an e46 M3 with a specialist who knows his stuff. Like to do that to keep the service history full and from experience I know that I can trust him. He charges £70 an hour though which I dont mind on a £10k car, but not for a £3k runabout. Also toyotas arent really his thing so may take longer than someone who knows the car. Anyone know any good independant toyota specialists in fife or Edinbrugh area to call for a quote?

Will get some quotes together then need to really consider whether or not to tackle it myself. Have access to an engine hoist and my uncles pit that I could use to work under it. From a couple of other posts I have read, people have managed to rig up a framework to support the box and transfer box. It will really come down to the garage costs for repair whether or not I tackle it I think. Need to wait till monday now though. anyone had one done that could give an idea of price? Have read of around £1600 from main dealer!

In January last year the clutch release bearing stuck on my 2004 petrol RAV which led the clutch to slip and give up. Took it to my local indie who charged me just over £500. Although I have now sold the car on, I see it regularly as it went to a friend and there have been no issues with the job the indie did.

£1600 eh? Those fancy showrooms and slippery salesmen must take some paying for.

Thanks for the cheerier note Mike. At £500 or around there I would be quite happy handing it over to an indy garage to do. That was a really decent price as the clutch kits I have seen run in the region of £200 on their own. Do you know if they resurfaced the flywheel for that as well?

Will start phoning round on Monday to get some quotes. the other problem now is it will need towed as the clutch is hardly biting at all so wont go over 10mph. Fingers crossed I get someone local to quote a reasonable price or im back to thoughts of DIY again!

The guys that look after my RAVs do ther clutch swap in situ but do use a ramp and most work is from below. It does involve loosening mounts and dropping the subframe etc but I think they did it in well less than a day last time. I go thru clutches quite often !!!  They are in Motherwell.

Re the flywheel no. I took the car off the road as soon as I realised what was up and had just enough bite to get it to the garage. As Bothy described the job was done on the ramp and I had the chance to look at the flywheel which was unscathed.

There are a lot of indies these days with experience of 4x4s and so it should not be too hard to find one who has got their hands on a RAVs delicate little places. I'll be thinking of you on Monday - let all of us here know how you get on.

have been phoning round to try and get quotes for doing the clutch and have had a lot of independant garages wont touch it due to the size of the job. Toyota main dealer was cheaper than expected at just over £1100 for clutch and fitting. They quoted 9 hours labour for doing the job. Toyota the only one to call me back so far with a price. Another 5 garages promised to call me back later with a price, but still waiting. Not keen on paying £1100 at main dealer for a car that is only worth £3000, but now a bit more hopeful that I may get an independant willing to do it for nearer the £500- £600 bracket with cheaper labour charges. Still tempted to have a go myself!
