I have just done a 72 miles each way run from Liverpool to Stafford to pick up an eBay purchase,

I got on the M62 to M6 to Stafford and set the cruise control in 6Th gear and averaged 57mpg both there and back in my 2.2 150bhp Avensis TSpirit

I don't think there's anything to complain about there do you???...I'm more than happy

is my avensis broken then as i can't get above 33mpg!?! o.k so that's not motorway driving its A + B roads but even still I'm hardly wringing it's neck  I drive a 2.2D T180 (06 plate, 77Kmiles) and try and change up at 2000revs each time. Parkers guide states a combined fuel economy of 47mpg - is it something I'm doing or might the car need looking at? Any ideas very welcome.

p.s I never use cruise control but am off on the motorway today so will try it out.

Without incriminating yourself, what speed setting did you have?

Also what is this stretch of motorway like in terms of gradient?

I sometimes approach 55 mpg average on A19 between Newcastle and York with a speed setting of 70mph which I am happy with. I have noticed however on this stretch of road, without the auro cruise on, you do need to change down, sometimes as far as 4th in order to maintain a 70mph speed.

Don't like using this auto cruise all the time, particularly when heavy goods traffic around, as your relative speed makes the overtaking manouvre take that much longer and often lorry drivers seem to become impatient if you are not overtaking quickly enough.

All in all however, would rather have this facility rather than not have it and looking forward to using it next month when driving down to south of France.

Heyup mate! Join the club, I have done that sort mpg before myself, some people don't seem to believe me, best I got was 61.5 mpg down to Conway and back and only a few miles of M56 motorway involved the rest is the A55, happy days!

I think it is fantastic for such a big car, I was using cruise control for 80% of the time just on the legal limit. My mpg computer is as near as spot on against fillup to fillup method checked it loads of times but don't bother now 'cos i know it's right.

Pete.

Not Bad !

I averaged 59.6mpg on the run down to Monaco last september, would have been more but my OSF caliper was slightly binding (when I put my hand on the tyre it was somewhat warmer than the other 3, at the time I put that down to it being a Dunlop, the others Michelin).

This was mainly night driving at an indicated 80mph.

I think the technique is to be smooth, anticipate, and never use the brakes !

Cheers

Buzby

I've averaged 51mpg at an average speed of 72mph on a run from a house near Preston to mine in Glasgow so I daresay if I had gone a bit slower I could have got a bit more.

Given that it's still cold though that's pretty good going.

theajds, the T180's DPF means that you don't get the same mpg as the non D-CAT - from posts on this forum my impression is that it may be as much as 5 mpg less but a lot of it is also down to the sort of driving that you do & therefore how often it regenerates.

On my 1800vvti, 52 plate automatic I got 47mpg on a run from Exeter to Lincolnshire & return, with the car well loaded with kit for a self catering holiday & two adults. I must admit to driving with a light right foot. Some motorways but mainly A roads were used. I was pleased with that.

What i Failed to state in my 1st post is that my Avensis has done 105000+miles

and yet it can still return great mileage figures like those quoted in the post

Infact Last summer i took myself and the wife to Torquay for a few days and at an average of 80mph it was returning about 50/51mpg

The 2.2 150 bhp Avensis can certainly be called a very comfortable .....Miles cruncher as it simply eats up the motorway miles effortlessly

Diesel engine longevity FTW :D

100,000 on a diesel engine is like 60,000 on a petrol engine :)

I'd agree with that the T180 is difficult to acheive the same mpg as the 150hp or lower models. I'm running a T180 tourer and best has been trip of over 200 miles computer stated 56.3mpg. It is quite a concentration to acheive consistant good mpg figures. I do make good use of the cruise control at over 40mph I use to accelerate, where appropriate. Great car had from new now over 120,000 wouldn't change it for anything else so sooner they bring out a T180 in the new Avensis the better!

didn't they just drop that in the UK (I admit that I haven't kept up with Avensis T27 offerings)?

In fact I've heard that they intend dropping all the 2.2 D4Ds for UK Avensis (brings the range average mpg & CO2 figures down).

  • 2 months later...

Just picked up my 2008 2.0 TR D-4D, its computer said 37.5 when I picked it up which worried me, realised that it needed resetting (previous Avensis auto reset on fill up) it hadn't been reset in its last 74 hrs of driving. Following reset & approx 200 miles of A roads I am currently getting 55mpg. Going to Salisbury in 2 weeks (300 miles) so hopefully this will be exceeded.
