The Dirty Weather . . . . .

. . . . of the last few days is reminding me how much I dislike the rear view on the Prius.

The new small Lexus hybrid should be available for test drive soon. I wonder if it will be any better?

You appear to own one but you do not say why you dislike the rear view of the car

I am talking about the view that I get (or should I say don't get) to the rear when I am driving. With the bottom half of the rear window covered in muck and that enormous bar blocking the view and the wiper on the wrong half of the upper part of the window, there is almost no rear view at all. I drove a few miles on the M25 a couple of evenings ago, after dark, raining, heavy traffic. Trying to change lanes was absolutely no fun.

Does your Prius not have door mirrors then?

Luckily I'm 6'6" so don't have any problem at all with the rear windows, in fact the bar/spoiler is just in the right place to cut out glare from those damn bright white lights some cars have! I'd never noticed the rear wiper being the wrong way round! I'll have a look later on when I go out.

As far as overtaking on motorways goes, I use the M25/M11/M20/M3 on a regular basis and luckily external rearview mirrors were designed for just such an event, people who don't use them tend to kill motorcyclists imho....

While my Prius was in for its 1st service I had a Vauxhall Insignia hatch as a courtesy car and the rear view in that was worse than the Prius. In fact while I was test driving cars before I chose the Prius the vast majority of modern hatchback cars have poor rearward viability. As for the rear wiper on the Prius I can't say I've noticed that its on the wrong way round.

PS I managed to squeeze a whopping 47MPG out of the Insignia, but that was on the A1 and A19. Once I started the urban driving that dropped like a stone to 36MPG over 68 total miles of driving.

My car has three mirrors and I was taught that good driving should include the regular use of all of them. I would prefer a rear window arrangment that lets me do that.

The rear wiper is set for left hand drive so it wipes the wrong side for us altho saying that the Japanese drive the same side as us so you would think they would have considered us a bit more :crybaby:

with regard to the rear wiper... in heavy rain when driving at any speed slower than about 15-20mph, you need the rear wiper on.... however I've found with all the hatchbacks I've had over the last 20-odd years, all from Mr T, including the Gen2 and Gen3, if you are driving at over 20-25mph you don't need it as the airflow keeps the rain off the back window! it's a pity it doesn't keep it off the front one too but there you go....

The bit of glass below the spoiler get's filthy - it takes but a couple of minutes before the journey to clean that bit, it did on the Gen2 as well.

The only comment on the way the wiper wipes, think yourself lucky you didn't buy an Avensis - the 2005 model I had wasn't capable of wiping a baby's bum - but as above, over 20-25mph you didn't need it on...

Having had a Mk4 Mondeo previously, with the huge rear end, I don't even use the lower half of the rear window on the Prius. Having the mirror adjusted to see through the top half only is about the same view as I had with the Mondeo. The interior mirror does very little to help lane changing IMO, I use it to check long distance traffic and always use the door mirrors and a turn of the head (something a lot of drivers think is too much effort) to check closer stuff. For reversing I use the door mirrors and the rear view camera.

I agree they may as well not have put any rear window in. I hate that lower window gets dirty so quickly and the top window doesn't really do it for me either. I got auto dimming rear view mirror though, don't need a spoiler system to aid me with that.

I don't like it how it limits us to just using the wing mirrors like some ford escort van.

Do you guys realise that the interior mirror is on TWO ball joints, and can actually be adjusted about 1 inch nearer the ceiling.... Gives a great view out of the back window too!

Well since you insist biggrin.gif It is especially the sides of the vehicle or the lower 1/3 all round really with an specific emphasis on the dirty behind. side windows are really clean probably down to the repellant windows and the wheels are like those on the 10th anniversary model.

You can also rotate it 180 degrees so it is upside down.

Gives you another half an inch or so.

When the government starts insisting on the man with the red flag again, can we have him sweep the roads as well??
