Which Clutch Rav4?

My wifes 2001 VVTI petrol Rav4 is needing a new clutch. I have been getting prices from local garages to do the job as from a bit of investigation it probably isn't something I want to take on in my garage at home.

Toyota main dealer quoted £1100 all in which was better than expected. I am still waiting for a few calls back but have had another garage come back with £840. £500 labour and £340 for an exedy clutch.

I have started doing a bit of shopping around myself and can get the exedy clutch kit for £260. I have also found a Valeo clutch kit for £190. This clutch though was listed as for an avensis verso but would also fit RAV4 2.0 petrol. On emailing the seller with the reg number(a reputable parts supplier) they confirmed it would also fit the rav4. Are these clutches interchangeable does anyone know? Also any feedback on Valeo clutches in Rav4's? I had one a few years back in an Audi and couldnt fault it, but every car is different

The dealer price is ridiculously high - they base it on a full engine out job.

It can be done with the engine in situ, where you tilt the engine - in fact there was a post on this just the other day. A price of around £650 is more like it.

On the makes of clutch, I can't help you much - with number 1 I use a ceramic metallic clutch 3 paddle as it doesn't burn up on launch. The other is an MR2 clutch - both cars use different engines to yours.

The 2 litre vvti is an engine that has been used on a number of cars so I'd expect the clutch to fit various models. The only difference is the weight of the car, but if yours is 2001 then its not as heavy as the current models.

As some others know, I use a garage in Motherwell who are used to swapping clutches on my cars !
