Weights Fitted To Outside Of Wheels

Hi everyone,

Just had new tryes fitted to my Prius (Gen II) and the guys have fitted weights to the outside of the rim which means the wheeltrims won't fit properly now. It didn't have any there before.

I just spoke to the tyre place and he told me "that's the only place they can go mate". This can't be right can it? All help gratefully received as this is really depressing and I'm sure they've cocked up!

Many thanks

Pete

It isn't right. They're talking out of their behind.

I assume you mean they've used the big heavy weights that are hammered on the outside edge of your wheel. The sort of weight for steel wheels and not alloy wheels?

You can get stick on weights that fit to the outer edge of the wheel as well as the inside of the wheel. Was it a back street tyre fitter who is trying to cut corners for not having the correct weights? Give them one more chance and then go to a proper fitter.

Look at it another way - thousands of Prius owners out there have the weights fitted in the correct place and can fit the correct rims.

Agreed. Despite the plastic trims, the Gen2 has alloy wheels and the balance weights should be stuck on, not hammered on!

Take it back and moan....

Yes I am afraid they have!

I hope they sort it out for you and are apologetic. I wouldn't go there again

Agreed; If they're alloys, go back and yell at them.

Clip-on weights should NEVER be used with Alloy wheels as they will damage them!

Only stick-on weights should be used, and either on the hub or inside the rim.

Any half-competent tyre fitter/wheel balancer should know that!!

Thanks for all of your replies.

Despite the manager's less than helpfeul "that's where they go mate" response, the lads that fitted the tyres immediately held their hands up and said "sorry mate - we'll change them for you right now". So all sorted now.

Thanks again to everyone who responded; I went back armed with info from this site prepared to argue - but didn't need to in the end!

Cheers

Pete
