Replacement Short Engine - Anything Else Covered?

With my current alternator problem I'd not given this much thought, but the T4 has just started burning oil. It never rains but it pours eh?

It was topped up with 2 litres 4 weeks ago, 1.5 litres at the weekend, and another .5 litre yesterday. Seemed odd as it has never used oil, but after looking on here, I have discovered I have the ZZ engine and most probably the oil consumption issue.

Just phoned Mr T and he definitely knew what I was on about because he asked about the service history straight-away. Luckily I should be covered as I have the full Toyota history and am 6 weeks within the 7 year 'secret warranty' period.

My MOT is going to be due around the same time any work will likely get done but I'm worried that the CAT will be screwed because of the oil and that will be another massive bill.

Does anyone know what they replace as part of the 'short engine replacement' and what allowances they make?

Any takers on this?

are they likely to replace the CAT? If not anyone know how much those babies are?

I didn't know about the secret warranty! How did you find out about that? I had a CAT replaced on mt T-180. If I remember correctly it was around the £1200 mark.

Hi mate, it is quite possible that the excessive oil useage could have damaged the Cat so do your best to impress this on them as they are very expensive .

If they pay for all of the work and your car has high mileage you paying for a new clutch to be fitted (just pay for the parts as they will have it off anyway) whilst it's all stripped down would be a good investment providing you are going to keep the car for a few years.

Best of luck with it all .... Pete.

I'm re-quoting someone else on the 'secret' warranty terminology - but the fact remains that it is not publicised and the cars were never re-called. Toyota have never once said to me that my car could be one that was affected. If I hadn't read it here then I would have been none the wiser and probably would not have gone to Toyota with the question in the first place.

Car is now 4 weeks off being 7 years old - imagine I found about it after this date and was faced with a massive engine bill. If the problem had surfaced a little later, then I would be none the wiser - that seems pretty secret to me.

Anyway, it's all booked in now, so at least it should get sorted. Thanks for the tip about the clutch Pete :)

Hi all,

Iv`e just joined the forum today after reading lots of interesting posts on the Avensis and problems associated with it, some of which are real eye openers to the extent of making me wonder wether I made the right choice.

Last June I bought a 2.0 DVD T63X with 50,000mls on an 07 plate, and have to say I love it it`s smooth, powerful, comfortable,

roomy, and very economical at around 50-54 mpg.

However, whilst reading these excellent informative posts, being the cautious guy that I am, iwas very interested to read about the `SECRET WARRANTY `for cars up to 7 years old! When I bought mine Iwas under the impression that the 3 yrs warranty had just expired an any repairs were my responsibility, butdoes what Iv`e just read on this post by ROO mean that there is still a chance I could get some more warranty from mr T. the car has F.S.H. apart from when I bought it from a non Toyota dealer who gave it a 50,000 ml service. It now has 53500mls, so does anyone know if that may affect it?

If anyone has any info on this mystery 7 yr warranty I would love to hear it and hopefully do something about it before any problems rear their ugly head

The 7 year not-so-secret warranty only applies to the oil consumption issues on the 1.8 petrol engines in the older Avensis's. It was such a major widespread problem that Toyota agreed to replace the bottom half of the engine even when the car was up to 100k miles and/or 7 years old.

As your car is a diesel it won't suffer from this issue.

I went to see MR T. today and got the details and prices for the extended warranty, a bit on the steep side, but you never know what problems you`re going suffer do you. Do you think i shouldn`t worry about warranty then `cos I`ve got the 2.0 ltr D4D, From what I`ve read on here I`m not so sure I shouldn`t buy one. There are postings about the car going into `limp mode` from blocked .E.G.R. MR T. assures me that they would fit new parts rather than clean them, and it would all be covered by the warranty, surely this is along with full A.A. Cover with Club Toyota & it`s other benifits would go a long way to justifying the cost of the warranty, or do you think I`m being over cautious ?

Sorry to bring this back up, but has anyone who has this problem suffered a re-occurence of the problem.

Noticed I was very low on oil yesterday during a routine check - only 3k after my last service.

hi roo .judging by the amount of oil your engine has been using i wonder if ur pcv is blocked ive seen this with plenty of zz engines while replacing short blocks the rocker cover itself requires replacing in this case .if uve had ur countermearured block fitted already and u still confirm oil consumption of more than 0.8 litres per 1000miles id b returning to my dealer
