I have an 88 starlet xl. It has an oil leak and the timing belt isn't quite right in it either. This, I think, causes the car to stuuter occasionally, I think?? (can somone confirm if this is correct)

Today I took it for a drive for about 45 minutes. There was heavy rainfall last night. The car started fine and drove fine but after the 45 minutes, it died. Completely. I couldn't start it. The Battery was fine. It was the engine.

I topped up the oil and eventually after about 15 minutes, it struggled and then started. No choke needed. It has been driving fine since. (for the passed few hours at 25 minutes at a time, twice, it drove fine) What could have caused that? Moisture, Dirty petrol or carb? Or is the engine reacting to the bad timing belt?

how low was the oil, the paseo ran out once and it wouldnt start at all, think their is a cut off sensor that wont let u start the car if the oil too low. Also would get the timing done on the car before u cause serious damage, with car thats 16 years old it could be anything

There is an oil leak like I've said. I usually have to top up every ten days or so. I normally get the warning light and then take care of it. I didn't get any warning today, but minutes after I put oil in, it restarted.

Any idea how much it costs for the timing belt replacement and oil leak fixed? I'm in Dublin Ireland and use EUROS.
