How Many Keys Should I Be Getting?

I haven't taken delivery of my '57 plate car yet.. I was just reading about master keys (I forgot to ask when I was viewing the car.. oops!).

I just rang the toyota dealer who said there are two keys and there is no master. But that's not what I have read on here. Unless masters were used on earlier or later cars than mine.

Can anyone give me the definitive answer either way?

Thanks

When I bought my 58 pre-registered Avensis, it came with two 'normal' black remote keys and a grey key which did not have the remote buttons on them. I think it was called a 'valet' key. I've never tried it but I think it opens the doors and starts the car but won't open the boot or glove compartment. I'm not sure what a master key is. However my car was effectively new with only 19 miles on the clock and I assume the three keys are what you should expect with your car.

Hope that helps.

Thank you Luthier.

A master key (as I have on my other car) is one that is permanently mated to the ECU and allows you to program other keys to disable the immobiliser. You leave it somewhere safe at home and use one of the other keys day to day.

The car I used on the test drive was black with remote buttons. It sounds like I'm getting the two black keys you describe and no valet key - fine by me :)

my 57 plate Avensis has 2 black keys & a grey valet key. I seem to recall reading that they had stopped supplying the valet keys at some point though?

With my 2010 Avensis I received 2 black keys with remote buttons and a grey key without.

As I understand it, you can use either black keys to register new keys and de-register lost keys to the immobiliser, but the grey one is just a limited "slave".
