Carina E 1.8 Lean-Burn

Hi,

i'm Dale from Holland and new to this forum. It looks pretty good guys. I'm typically a bit of a racer. Raced old Datsun's in the 80's and more recently i've discoverded the toyota. Well impressed with the Corolla E10 4afe and even more impressed with my last Corolla, a E9 Gti 4age. What a cracker!! 3 years ago i bought a '98 Carina E 1.8 lean-burn.... Well, to be truthful, its been reliable until now, but the lean-burn function on the moterway is just forcing me into looking for a new car, which is a shame because the rest of the car is fine. I just can't stand the way the lean-burn switches in and out all the time just when you don't want it to! Is there anyone here who has experience with the working/switching of the lean-burn? If i can find a way of switching it off for (some)moterway use then i'll be keeping this, otherwise, great car. It's strange, in the 1st and 2nd gear the lean-burn function is not 'switched' on. Only in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear does the lean-burn come into 'action'. Is there maybe a way to disable the lean-burn from the switching source,- the gearbox? I can't find any info, anywhere about wiring/disableing this. Any tips or info will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Dale

The engine has a lean combustion under 4200rpm and a stochiometric combustion above those 4200rpm.

I guess you refer to the green and orange econo light on the dashboard. They will only tell you if you drive economical or not. They use the MAP and throttle postion to decide if you are driving economical or not. It has not anything with the leanburn combustion. The air/fuel ratio during leanburn combustion is about 22:1 and a stochiometric combustion has an air/fuel ratio around 14:1. If you have a lean combustion you do reduce some bad things in the exhaust. That is why it was popular during mid 90 to have a lean combustion.

Hey dale, i have no idea if this would work but i think if you swapped the ECU and lambda sensor (exhaust oxygen sensor)in your car with pre lean burn parts, that might disable the lean burn.As far as i know its the same engine except for how the ECU is mapped.

just a thought,BUT get a second opinion before you spend money.

Even if you find a elctronic way of disabaling the lean burn function would you not still have to remove the air control valve assembly which has 8 ports which connects between the cyl head and the inlet manifold having 4 butterflies on every other port which is opened and shut by the air control valve switching diaphragm assembly

I dont really understand when you say you know when this lean burn system is acting in and out of certain gears except for looking at the green eco light I have the super smooth 1.8 auto version and conseqently don't realise what is going around me!

Its so cool and quite one would think you were driving a jag The auto models which have a reputed 57 mpg at on the extra urban cycle and 30.6 around town

If i felt more fit i would do a gentle gasflow etc on the head and feel confident could get the mpg up as good as the manual around town, making the auto the best model in this ever increasing stop start town like driving we all have to put up these days, and because these autos seem to pass well over the 100000 mile mark with no problems, then no clutch to worry about either! Sorry for getting a little off the subject but the autos are the best!!

BALIKBAYAN is right the leanburn fucntion is a built in design of this type of engine this is how you get such good Mpg with a big engine and a car weighing over 1700kg! if its performance you after id say send off the Ecu and get it remapped by one of the specialist companys the prices have come down a lot
