Wont Go In Gear

Hi all,

The other day on my way to work i was braking for some traffic lights and had a loss of power. i had only been driving for 15 mins tops.

It seemed at the time the engine had failed but i could turn the engine on and it sounded fine. When i tried to engage a gear i was unable to in all but 3rd, 4th and reverse (all with a lot of effort). i turned the car off and pushed into a parking space but every turn of the wheels it would stick and become extremely difficult to push (thinking it was stuck in gear) it would click if i was able to get it past that sticking point.

obviously i had the car towed home but i was wondering if anyone knows what the fault might be.

i have a Toyota Avensis 1.8 VVTI 110k 2003 model t3x.

About 2 years ago i had the engine changed as it was consuming too much oil.

If anyone can give me a rough idea this would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

can you get the gears ok when engine is not running.does the clutch pedal feel like diengaging,is there increase in the cllutch pedal play.

you may have checked these, but i was thinking the clutch may be your problem.

Hi,

When the car is turned off i cant get any gears either and i think it may be stuck in first as i cant move the gear lever.

The clutch feels fine, no play or give.

dont know if your models gear change is cable or linkage. this would have been disturbed when the earlier engine problems were sorted.if there is no one else on this forum with a simuler model as yours who can advise how to check this limkage or cables.

when its in gear, anyone you can get it in,is there a lot of play with the gear lever, which would point to linkage problems.

even if there is a problem with this its not a DIY unless you know how to adjust it correctly.

There is no play with the gear lever at all.

I will be sending it to Toyota but was just after a rough idea of what the fault could be.

I can change brakes and the odd DIY on cars but this is well out of my league trying to do this lol.

Interesting that it may point to the replacement engine as when i called Toyota the service guy didn't want to say much about the repair even when pressed he just said it'll cost £200 just to look at.

Thanks for your help. It has put my mind at ease a little.
