Gearbox Rattle

Hi All from Scotty Sunland,

Today took wife's 3 door petrol for a decent run for first time in ages, as its only been getting short distance travel. The gearbox sounded like a bag of spanners until WELL AFTER the car had reached operating temperature. I am aware that engines and gearboxes heat up at very different rates, but it was a good 10 miles before it quietened down.

Bothy's garage pals changed the oil not that long ago....could it just be the oil had pretty much just vacated the places it should sit on due to the wee car getting underused....?

Nothing to worry about, as I am assured these units are wifeproof and bombproof....?

Oh crumbs (subdued response).

I knew I'd lost a bag of spanners somewhere.... can I have them back please?

Odd as I leave my RAVs sitting for spells as well and never have a problem. far as I know its pretty much the same box. Shouldn't matter if the car is only used for 2 or 4 miles (not 3). Has it been ok after the oil change or did you just forget that being a lighter car, you don't need to heave the gearstick so much??

I've just been using number 1 RAV to pull down some 30' trees and despite the rear wheels off the grun, and the tyres smoking, the gearbox is ok. Give the guys a phone (call) if yer not sure.

Or wur ye towing a Rangers fan at the time ?? They tend to scream a lot.

Happy to give it a try (not pulling trees) for my expert opinion.

If the cars been fine, seems strange that its noisy for a spell....does that happen when yer wifes driving it?? Or is she deaf from years of listening to y.....uh...um... River City?

I tried to give yer post a positive vote the noo, but the computer says I have reached my quota of positive votes for the day...... which is more than odd cos I haven't used that facility ever!!! I want to know who's cheating and using my name to cast votes!

Nope I bet its not the gearbox. It'll be the empties behind the seats. It takes a while for the heap to settle down

Does yer wife perhapos keep cats? They have become a much loved item now, and people seem to be collecting more and more of them. Maybe yer wife has confused the pastime with collecting cat convertors ???

Used The Wee Car again today, simply because it is less expensive to burst a 4.2 alloy DOWN THE POTHOLES than one of my 4.3's with a Flunrat Tyre attached. NO SIGN AT ALL of yesterday's mysterious rattle, which on hindsight sounded like a run-dry hydraulic tappet/follower widget thing.

No news is good news....thanks to all for their skintillating input and quality of replyfulment....Aye, right....

too late - after watching the brother in law fall oot o ma tree (he wis cutting it doon at the time) I had to resort to a few glasses to get over the shock. Him? I just ran him home.

See - the rattle wis a Rangers supporter trying tae take cover frae marauding St Mirren fans !!
