"drain Water From Fuel Filter" Advice Please

Hi Folks,

Prior to a 20,000 mile full service on Toyota Avensis Diesel (2010) I got this warning light "Drain water from fuel filter". Now at 24,000 miles this warning has appeared again. I beginning to suspect the filter wasn't changed and just drained. Has anyone any experience of draining the fuel filter on this model? Is it difficult to complete?

Many thanks

I've never had to drain water out of a fuel filter in over 25 yeras and 26 Derv cars later. Where have you been buying your fuel from? It could b a problem with the sensor! My 1st step would be to check that and change the filter.

hi mate

have a look at the filter cylinder and you must to see a drain plug on the bottom.

have it released slightly just to investigate whether or nont water is really available.

My car's petrol, but I used to drive a diesel minibus and had to do this regularly.

Hi,

Diesel engines and their fuel components are very sensitive to water.

That's why most diesel cars have an extra combined fuel filter/water separator fitted, compared to petrol cars.

Water is heavier than diesel, so it sinks to the bottom of the filter housing where a level sensor keeps an eye on it.

A warning is issued before the water level in the filter becomes high enough to be sucked into the system, with (long term) negative expensive effects.

Drain all the filter content into a glass jar and see what comes out.

You may have to do that regularly, because the fuel tank may contain water as well.

In that case, find a better diesel supplier.

If only pure and clean diesel comes out, off to Toyota to have this checked.

Don't forget to close the drain plug!
