Egr Valve Bolts Torque Settings?

Hi Folks,

37.5K miles and MPG seems to be dropping off a bit so have decided to give the EGR valve a clean as per excellent post in tips section but was wondering if there is a specific torque setting for the bolts when replacing

18lbft in old money, 24Nm in new.

My mpg isn't all it could be at the moment. However, I'm inclined to think it is just this winter, which, is it just me(?), but it seems to be dragging on and on. Usually doesn't bother me, but I could do with a bit more warm sunshine now. I suppose the cold just started relatively early

Thanks Guys. Agree about the cold going on and on Chris but MPG seems to have taken a downturn over the last 4/5 weeks when it has been marginally warmer. Figure at 37.5K it can't do any harm to clean the thing out [i hope  ]

Youll be surprised, I cleaned mine at 31k and sure as hell was.

Central port on manifold was fine, but the two smaller side ports were completely blocked and cleaned a fair bit off the valve stem bit too - after cleaning, it then moved in and out a bit easier too.

MPG picked up by around 3-4mpg too.

What moves in and out easier??? I have cleaned mine a few times and im yet to find or see anything that moves in that valve????? I can see a thin polished steel bar but it doesent move??

I think the plunger moves freely if you separate the solenoid. I'll find out shortly as I'm about to start on it............

Yep, the plunger bit.

I took apart the motor / spring bit too - think it was a couple of allen keys bolts.

This allowed me to get right in with my Asda flexi neck vibrating toothbrush to clean right through the valve housing / around plunger bit too - works a treat.

Update:

Well took the EGR off and was quite surprised to see how relatively little build up there was having seen the horror pics posted by others. The ports in the manifold were certainly restricted but the valve was relatively lightly coated. Gave it a good clean out but didn't remove the solenoid or end cover as no need. Didn't have to use a vibrator either

Have to see if it's made any difference to MPG - maybe it's just needing a service. Will check tyre pressures later.

When Anchorman was last up here, I showed him how to clean mine, in case my hands got all dirty.

This was done at about 15k miles, and I think the soft consistency of what little sooty build up there was is in the main attributable to Shell V-Power for 13k miles of its life. Anchs thought it may be my imagination, but after cleaning I thought it became a tad more responsive, but with the panel air filter and Kingo Chip, it was never exactly sluggish.

The very next morning, with Mr.Supercool in my passenger seat, my car WENT INTO LIMP MODE, totally ruining my only pair of pants. "Did ye ever buy a code reader, Kev" I was asked, calmly. Stopped car, restarted, and never happened again....did buy a code reader two days later, so if you're in North Glesga area, don't buy one....

MPG was never checked, as it was shortly after this in October that winter hit.

Big Kev

I just bought myself a can of carberetor cleaner from Halfords and had plans to clean the EGR over the coming weeks! I have covered 15k since it was cleaned by Toyota free of charge and I figure it's worth keeping on top of as I don't fancy the limp mode happening again!

Will need to have a read of the guide first

A couple of tips:

Brush/vacuum any grit and dust from around the valve body before removal so none falls into the manifold.

Also get some marigolds and a face mask Blue - it's a messy business

I found it best to spray a little and let it soak a bit to soften the sooty sludge before scraping out and vacuuming, then repeating until the bulk was removed. Finally clean up with a cloth soaked in carb cleaner. Once clean, let the solvent evapourate before re-assembly to avoid misfiring

I think you've found the secret - little and often is probably the way to go. Far less of an effort then.

Good news about the TPMS. Are you going to put a switch in the circuit so it can be easily reversed should the need arise?

hey pal. No need to put a switch as such in, though you can if you want. If I need to activate it again ill just connect the pink wire up again. Only takes 2 mins to pop the dash pod off to do it
