Whats wrong with my car?!?!?!

need a little help from anyone here.

lately i've noticed that my engine have a fairly loud ticking noises. it didnt have it before! i've asked my local dealer/garage to take a look, but like usual, they said there is nothing wrong! (i'm sure they just couldnt be bothered to check!)

and now there is even screeching noises coming out of it! and its not just when the engine is cold neither, it screeches even after a long run!

i've had the cam belt changed about 2k miles ago, so i dont think its that! and it has been regularly serviced/oil changed. is there something i've missed before? there hasnt been any performance changes nor has it drunk more fuel. just the noises.

Toyota said there is nothing wrong with the car and i dont have to worry about it. but IMO, i dont believe that!!

could it be something inside the engine? ie need to strip the engine? anyone else experienced this with their car before?!?!

Hi mate

A few things that make it tick

Most common and normal is the injectors... i take it yor car is injected and not a standard carb?

2nd Tappits

3rd Cam shaft worn

4th Paranoia!

2and and 3rd most unlikely.. 1st and 4th very likely!

I hear strange noises on mine.. every day it gets worse and worse... 2 years down the road and it still sounds as if it is getting worse.... took mine in to the mechanic and he said i was nuts... LOL... and its paranoia that does it mate...

The screeching is prolly fan belt needs tightning... Because of the cold weather and the need for your lights on at night, heater etc will cause strain on the alternator making it work harder.

I really think you have nothing to worry about.

Why dont you bring your car to Brooklands meet and let some of the guys have a listen mate.. sure your find its ok.

Mine ticking noise was my timing out by 5 deg and a lose spring loaded cam gear wheel, no biggy and was fixed in an hour for £30. I think steve is right about paranoia, after a few months of owning my car the performance seemed to drop off so I had it looked at. It was performing just as good as the day i got it. The techy said it was because I had gone from an old 1.8 to a modern 2.0l but i had got used to the extra power!

cheers for the advice steve and jimma.

havent thought about the injectors. are they expensive to replace?!?!

Tappits: been mentioned by some friends before! eeeeeek!

Cam shaft worn: might be a good excuse to get some performance cams!! :P know anywhere that sells performance cams for NA Starlet?!?!?!?

Paranoia: yep!! cant object to that reason! :P

Cam belt need tightning: been mentioned by some friends before as well.

Steve: do you know when westover toyota is moving to wallace down?!?!? and is there a toyota specialise round the area?

have to see whether i'm free on the 8th for the meet. will define come to the meet if i'm free! :D

  • 5 weeks later...

Please advise how this story ends......!!

I have a Carina E from 1994 with exactly the same symptoms

and it would be great to know how to fix it....

My car is regularly serviced and the cam belt was also

changed about 10k ago...

I had a similar problem with one of my old cars... my local garage said the same thing... there's nothing wrong with the car... but it turned out to be the distributor, the bearings inside it had worn out!!!

Hi Uts, my own thought on your problem ( although you don't say what car you have ) is screeching is to do with a loose fan belt, if the ticking is coming from one of the items run by the fan belts, that give 3 possibilities, alternator, pas pump, or ( if fitted ) air/con pump.

If your not happy with the help you have received from your dealer/garage try a new dealer that does have time for you,

Good luck

Bob :) .
