Hi Jont,As request please see the photos of the subwoofer. It means that the toolkit gets moved to in the tray...1207408340_CdXV2-L.jpgThen underneath is the sub, although filling the wheel it is much smaller than what I had from Bose in the wheel in the Murano1207407979_reBQL-L.jpgThe Toyota part number but no real JBL information.1207407520_mQKth-L.jpgSpeakers in the doors get a little logo as well.1207406537_SrEsS-L.jpgMust say now it is biamped and bedded in the sound is getting rather good. The other day I had Tiny Tempah blowing the air so hard that my suit trousers were flapping and without a single bit of air distortion. And a bonus shot, the DAB aerial as it gets fixed on the windscreen.1207406990_RoRRB-L.jpg

Thanks JP ... will catch up soon and can show off mine ;-)

One immediate downside of the solar roof is that we don't have a spare wheel now !! ... It's one of those combined sealant/compressor units in the wheel well - be interesting to have seen if I'd gone for the JBL upgrade what they would have done with the sub !!

Actually, punctures aside that could be a blessing in disguise. Surely with all.that space you could now have a 15" sub built in there in a specific enclosure :-)

Does that actualy work then because it looks to me as if the sound from the sub would be incredibly muffled by the time the boot carpet and floor is back in place.

Yes it does. Low frequencies aren't directional. It works perfectly fine.

Yeah, I know they are not directional as such but sound waves are carried by air so I remain surprised that it works because I cannot see where the air can get out of that enclosed space!. No home theatre sub woofer cone is obstructed in the manner that this JBL one is that after all!

I remain sceptical.

Loads of vehicles have in spare wheel subwoofers. Our old Nissan Murano had it with its bose system, several Audis have it. I had a BMW 7 series which had two and 12 other Speakers yahoo.gif

Just works fine, stop thinking so much and actually experience it thumbsup.gif

PS. I've used to have two subs in our lounge in order to get rid of some of the dead spots, one Velodyne and one SVS (cylinder model) which was behind super quality sofas much thicket than the boot of a Prius ;-) Sure you can always get better, but do you really want to give up the already tiny boot? And even then, that is probably not the best place to put it. Fact it it works, sceptical or not.

LOL just came out of a meeting with a group of engineers and technical architects with a similar discussion albeit very different topic.

If it helps, I'm not saying you get the best sound quality possible :-)

Low frequency sound waves are diffracted a lot. I would also expect the sub woofer to vibrate the bodywork of the car and for the sound to be transmitted through the solid parts.

It mainly fills a gap indeed where the standard Speakers just "bottom out", it allows to 'feel' it more. Not as sickening as the sub 20hz capability I had at home which was really stomach turning with the right recordings.

To be honest it is a really small woofer, and I doubt it really goes down much more compared to the jbl 6x9 that are in the front doors. But as I have had for nearly 2 months a standard prius on loan I can draw a very good distinction in quality which is quite remarkable. Although I want happy until Toyota decided to biamp the system and now it comes into its own.

The limitations now are the mounting points and the cheap plastic door covers, in comparison to the other cars we have had and the Audi cabrio I drive on a daily basis.
