Going To Attempt The Remap/mod The D4D Myself

Hi,

I'm going to attempt to remap and squeeze a bit more power of out the D4D (88BHP version).

My friend say he can get hold of the software, it might be a BDM or flash through the OBD2 port but not sure yet.

Plans:

1. I will make a scoop/funnel for the stock air box (out of fibreglass) that attaches onto the end pipe from the stock airbox, this will direct cold air into the airbox, i think at the moment it will still ingest a little warm air from the engine bay.

2. Debating whether to fit a K&N filter in the airbox, generally the aftermarket filters do next to nothing. Also a CAI isnt really needed on diesels, hence retaining the stock airbox. Does anyone know if you can get them for the D4D and where?

3. Possibly weld flanges and fit a decat or HFC (due to the 1 peice exhaust system), i need to look into the DPF arrangement. Does anyone know the arrangment and possible deletion of the DPF (unsure if it has a CAT too like petrols)?

4. Flash the ECU and tune myself on a dyno.

I'm hoping to get 120-125BHP out of her with 160-170 ftlb - at this intial stage it doesnt seem impossible. I'm a little new to tuning diesels but proficient in tuning petrols/turbo's so hopefully it wont be too difficult.

Will add pictures soon of the airscoop.

Cheers

I've heard the denso ecu is locked, and you'll have to go piggyback/chip.

My mate said it can be done, also i just looked on the Internet and places are now offering remaps for mk2s.

Now if it through using a bdm or obd2 I don't know yet tbh.

Still i will look under the bonnet, aim is to keep it as grandad looking as possible 0-60 could be in the 9s but in gear will be more interesting/useful.

Well that's interesting, is there any risk of damage to the engine by doing this?

That purely depends on how far you take the engine, believe me i could have got more out of it but it started to develop black smoke so i backed off, also the EGT were hot. Black smoke in diesel is un-burnt fuel, the turbo engagement wasn't altered that much either it was pretty much spot on for a good power curve.

There's also the issue of what the clutch can take - i didn't witness any clutch slip. Manufacturers build in certain tolerances so to an extent you can always push the engine more, you can boot it everywhere and it may knock off 10% of longevity - it really depends.

I'm still testing the car on the road, i did give a BMW 318d a fright though :D

It's no hatch hot :D, but i just couldn't stop laughing driving it - go the granddad mobile!. It also doesn't seem to run out of puff as much either highier up.

My mate said 'It just not right' :D.

I've removed the spare wheel etc and fabricated a snorkle for the stock airbox so it only collects cold air as opposed to warm from the engine bay - though its not substantial.

p.s IIRC the stock turbo runs at around 1.4-1.5 bar and has a side mounted intercooler.

Awesome news!

Once you've found the sweet spot for the tune, you could easily start charging for it. do any other Toyotas use that D4D engine? does the Aygo?

FMIC next then? custom intake/snorkel?

Hi mate, glad to hear you achieved your goal.

Will you be posting details of how you actually did it or will that remain a siray123 secret? ;).

Pete.

Ended up @ 117bhp/190 ft-lb torque. Baseline was 91BHP, this an overlay of various tunes and slight change of turbo engagement etc.

So what did you actually do? Did you simply increase the rail pressure to provide more fuelling and change turbo boost, or was it something else?

That must be mental in a car that size
