Front Brake Pads Renewal

Been here many years ago.

Got new front pads for the Avensis Verso. Wheel off, caliper out, old brake pads out....now how the hell do you

get the brake piston back into its housing to allow the greater width of the new pads? Remember shouting and

screaming at the similar pistons, many times before.

Is there any easy way to release the pressure and get the piston back into its housing that doesn't include

shouting and screaming at it?

Pretty sure there's a tool for doing it but maybe just paying the mechanic guy I have £30 to do it is the easiest

way.

Thanks for any help and advice.

Ken

Most mechanics use a G-clamp to retract the piston - using an old brake pad as a spacer between the clamp and piston.

First you should remove thee brake master cylinder cap.

It is also recommended to open the bleed screw if the car has ABS - the ABS distributor doesn't always like brake fluid pushed backwards through its control valves.

There are loads of video clips on Youtube - just search for "Changing brake pads"

Here's a link to get you started.

I usually just sort of wiggle the caliper while over the disc with the original pads in place or just push it in by hand or, if its being stubborn, use a bar/lever to lever it back in, gently, a bit at a time, making sure the piston stays square in the caliper. Don't need a special tool.

Oh, forgot. Or a wide bladed screwdriver - like a london pattern one - between the old pads. Doesn't matter if it damages their surface cos you're chucking them away anyway.

Thanks for all ideas and assistance.

Borrowed a C clamp from a mate - it was a hand pump job rather than a screw in part - managed to get the piston

back enough to place new pads in. All done and dusted. Might invest in a couple for future use. Seen them in

Aldi/Lidl for a tenner and well worth it.

Thanks again.
