Cant Open My Car

Hi

New member here. I wonder if anyone can enlighten me.... My Avensis estate ()57 reg) wont open with my remote key (black), my wife's remote key (black) or the manual key (grey) which you put into the lock on driver's side. Does this mean that I have a flat Battery? I thought the grey manual key was an emergency key, ie it should open the car if, for whatever reason, the black keys wont work.

Many, many thanks

the grey key is a valet key & has reduced functionality compared to the black ones.

if you are sure that the Battery in your remotes are OK it could be that your car has a flat Battery.

would have thought that the door lock would still operate manually though (it would on my last car, a Vauxhall).

Never heard of this before. I would expect the keys to open the doors even without power from the car Battery. Have you resolved it yet?

I went to my local MR T the other day to look a the new style Avensis Tourer T4 spec and try out our kid seats in it, the keyfob he gave me did not open the door so I used the emergency key which is held in the fob. This did open the door and when I went to start the car it didnt make a peep. I advised the salesman of this and when I went back to try the seats with the kids in they gave me the same car to check and was advised they recharged the Battery...

I'm sure somewhere I read that for some reasons some of the new Avensis Tourers draw power from the Battery which causes them to drain rather rapidly... but cant find the post anymore :-(

Hi,

Any of the black- or grey keys can open the lock on the driver's door mechanically, even if the Battery is flat or disconnected.

A modern car is stuffed with electronics, some of which will always use some Battery power when the car is locked.

For instance, the remote locking receiver and immobiliser unit will be active, for your convenience and protection.

So, if you don't use the car for a couple of months the Battery will go flat and you will have to get in with the key, open the hood and recharge the battery.

If e.g. you go abroad for some time or don't use the car during the winter, better disconnect the battery and then lock it with any of the keys.
