Hi All,

Have recently bought a Rav4 which had been stood around for aver a year. Have never had one of these before, but whilst having tested the clutch in the conventional way it seems to be ok and drives fine BUT..... Not sure if this is normal with these cars as it appears that the clutch is slipping when initially reved hard under load whilst driving to accelerate as the revs rise then settle down and carry on increasing with speed as normal (just as if the clutch were slipping (but ...

There isn't normally anything unusual about the clutch. If you just ease presssure on the clutch pedal before it settles, does it effect it?

Sorry for delay in replying, got side tracked. Hope not too late, as am off to bed myself soon, so will look out for your reply in the morning if the response now.

Have not tried easing pressure as you recommend, but have been up hills fully loaded and no problems.

Have put into high gear with hand brake on and revved whilst releasing clutch, and engine will stall.

wondering if centre plate of clutch may be sticking on splines which may be rusty due not having been used for over a year.

Basically, you should try running the RAV for a few miles - it may be that there is gunge on the clutch plate, or rust on the contact surfaces....

It could be that the clutch is worn but time will tell. The early model RAVs were given a low 1st gear for soft off-roading so with its nippy engine, it is possible to slip the clutch on hard accelaration whereas in 4th or 5th, this won't happen. Does the clutch bite when the pedal is up near the top, or down near the bottom????

The clutches last around 60k to 80k miles.

Hi,

Thanks for your assistance.

It bites when peddle low, but car is now on 86K miles so may be on its way out perhaps.

I will monitor it over the next few days.

maybe clutch mech is worn - give it a try for 200 miles and see how it goes...altho stop if it gets worse! It may just be things are a bit sticky. (One of my RAVs was off the road/laid up for almost 2 years so I have a little experience. The other thing to check is whether the brakes are working ok.

I agree. Run it for a while and see what happens.

I really have no jdea if it is relevant to your case but I bought a 4.2 RAV that had been stood for a year and I too had just that issue. Turned out to be a sticking release bearing that wasn't releasing freely all the time.
