Clutch Failure

Hi, Clutch failed afer 70k miles and had new clutch and flywheel replaced by dealer. Cost 2000 euro one year out of warranty. Was told it was a problem in 20% of 2004/2005 D4D avensis. Wondering if anybody got compensation from Mr T as it is obviously a faulty product. Thanks

Faulty how? I thought 60-70k miles was the average life of a clutch...!

Hi Cyker, Not in my experience as it only happens in 20% of cases whereas others do considerably more. This adds nearly 700 euro per year to my motoring. I drove a Peugeot 405D for 10 years and 250,000 miles with first days clutch and engine still perfect!!thanks for response.

If it is any comfort the clutch on my 2006 Mondeo TDCI (130hp) went at 34,000 miles. The DMF had also to be replaced. The bill from the Ford Dealer was £1500. Ford refused to help despite car still being under warranty. Result - I will never buy another Ford and I will continue to tell the world about it!

Clutch wear varies wildly, as it depends on so many factors such as driving style etc.

The clutch is starting to get heavy on mine after 80k miles so will need replacing soon. Diesels can suffer clutch/flywheel wear sooner due to the high levels of torque involved.

I had a Misubishi Galant from 60,000 to 190,000 miles and never had a problem with the clutch, I don't think it was ever changed. Why do we have so many problems today?

clutche are just like brakes, misuse can wear both out in a short miliage, somre people tend to drive on their brakes, not gradualy slowing for lights, junction etc,but brake at the lat minute.with cluches some slip their clutches.as when stopped on a hill, instesd of using the handbrake, they hold it by slipping the clutch which shortens its life .

with most diesels these days you have the Dmf fitted, which is easyly damaged with the torque that these engines turn out.more so with hard ecceleration from lower speed.

so when you buy a car second hand, you dont know how the brakes or clutches were used by the previous owner.and you could land up with a large bill to for replacment of the parts.if you claim under any warranty on these you have been given on your second hand car.the dealer most likly will say you have caused the problam as it was all right when it was sold to you.

I would think the at least 1 reason same as brake pads - not allowed to use asbestos friction materials anymore.

having no asbestos does not help, but there are plenty of people who still get over 80000 miles out of them.

wifes hyundai brake discs show hardly any wear.but toyota/lexus soon show disc wear after a short miliage.

I agree a lot of people ride the clutch at lights etc, but Is it not the Dual Mass flywheel that is giving most of the trouble day, and not the wear? A lot of people are changing them for the older normal type.
