Advice Needed On Buying Rav4

Hi, I am thinking of buying a RAV4, only have around £2000 to spend, wondering if anyone can advise me on the best model for my price range, what to look out for/avoid, and also - are all RAV4s 4 wheel drive or are some only 2 wheel drive? I need a 4x4 to get up a hill in the snow in winter etc to look after my horse. Do not need to tow. Currently I have a Hilux Surf, (which I absolutely love but he is getting a bit old and the back window and a side window have seized up and power steering pump leaks) but was hoping a RAV4 might be a bit more econominal. Any advice would be very much appreciated, thanks.

I'd guess you may be looking at a late 4.1 model...maybe circa 1998 - 1999. Have a look at the various websites. I saw a 3 door 1995 go for £720 last week which looked in nice condition. Must admit I did put a bid in but I'd have been crucified (its coming close to Easter) if I'd bought it.

The models from 1994 to 2000 all use the same engine etc so its really whether you want 3 or 5 doors. The 4.2 came out around 2001 with a new engine and slightly better mpg.

There are some 2WD versions, but if you check out the pinned topics, theres a better description of the model range.
