Help Needed With P Code 1250

Can anyone help me with a problem I'm having with my rav4 d-4d yr2002. When i start to get near 3000rpm the car starts to chug/hold back if more acceleration is applied the revs die back to idling speed and the engine management light comes on. This can be reset by turning the ignition off the on again but the fault is still there. I had it coupled to the computer which gave a fault code of P1250 turbo malfunction but nothing in the book. I've been told by a main dealer that i need a new turbo can anyone tell me if this is correct before i spend the money. Thank you.

Hi and welcome to the club

Try a search in this forum for SCV and/or VSV.

This code appears quite regularly. It points to a fault associated with the turbo but may well not be the turbo itself, or so I believe

I Googled it and it comes up with this in a lot of results.

P1250 = PRC Solenoid Circuit Malfunction, Not Toyota specific but something to do with fuel pressure maybe ?

I dont want to mislead you, but are you sure your main dealer knows its a turbo related problem, it might be just a faulty solenoid or sensor somewhere.

No he's right it is a turbo related problem. It should actually read P1251 but not all generic readers will recognise it.

As Dave says look up VSV. This is a small turbo pressure sensor that often plays up.

Ive seen vsv mentioned before so i tried to price one thru europarts but was told this is only made by Toyota so when i spoke to the main dealer he said he had never sold one of these an it's unlikely that it will be the problem but I'm thinking he just wants me to buy a new turbo.

You might end up with a nw turbo but you need to check the other things first. The vsv is often repairable if you take off the pipes and squirt in WD40 then give it a shake. Also, you need to check the pipes are not split or on the wrong way. The link from the vac unit on the turbo sometimes sticks. There is very little to go wrong with the turbo hardware. If it lays an egg it will either smoke like one of the red arrows or make a horrendous noise. It is more likely the control which consists of the pipe from the vac pump to the vsv, the vsv which is controlled by the engine ecu (forget about the ecu) the pipes or the vac unit on the turbo or the turbo pressure sensor which tell the ecu how much it needs to open the vsv which then allows vacuum to the vac unit. You need to check its all working and piped up properly if somebody has done some work on it (mixed the pipes up like happened to an owner recently).

Can somebody find him some posts and pics?

You might be better trying a local independant just to get it sorted. ASk around Crewe. Is that Grenson outfit any good (or whatever they are called)?

Recon. If you buy one from Toyota it may well be a recon unless they are short of units but normally a new one will be very expensive. There are recon specialists that will rework yours. Try googling or findapart etc.

I would avoid until everything else has been checked.
