Diesel reliability.

Regarding Diesels, has anyone had any major problems with them?

Basically i went to look at one yesterday that got taken in as a part ex by a dealer. Its an 05 model and has just over 100k on the clock which is not a lot for a diesel. However the car has practically NO service history, as a result its going cheap.

The only service it seems to have had was way back at 32k. Other than that they had a expensive receipt for a an intercooler or something to do with a turbo ( do the diesels even run turbos?)

I couldn’t test drive it as the Battery was flat and they didnt have enough power in their jump pack to start the thing!

Cosmetically the car is in great condition but as its not been well maintained (as far as i can tell) should i avoid this?

Opinions appreciated

You can buy a low mileage engine on eBay for c £1200 delivered. Add fitting .. say £1600 all up.

Take the normal price for a car in good condition, subtract £1600 and there you have the real price of a car with a potential big engine blow up.

But that's only the start. You have all the hassle of buying one and fixing it, so ..

Parkers list a Yaris of that year at C £3700 depending on doors and spec,...http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/used-prices/Valuation.aspx?deriv=25191&plate=78#amount=5000&years=3

so your sums are:

Good one: £3700

Potential repair bills £1600

|Therefore top price you should pay - and you would be mad to pay it - £2100.

Personally I would not pay more than £1500. Bet the dealer is asking a LOT more - like £3k...

EDIT: and the story about being unable to start it.. how convenient with a clapped out engine which probably has a worn timing chain and camshaft and bangs away when cold...
