Buy a used engine and have an independant fit it for you, no way would it cost £2K for a second hand unit

You will get very little for scrap value

Kingo

Sorry to hear of your woes but welcome to the club anyway

So why are they telling you it needs a replacement engine?

Evening chap,

Sorry to hear of your woes. The following assumes you have that pinnacle of Ravism, the 4.2. Thoughts:

Assuming you get naff all for scrap value, which is certainly a plausible supposition lets assume you flog it for naff all locally, how will you feel when you see it going by driven by someone who has fixed the engine/sourced another engine?

You got a good deal when you bought the car - that was a good price for that car and that mileage. However unfortunate your current position, what will you buy that gives you elegance, comfort and supreme practicality for £scrap value plus £2k or less? Not much I suspect.

If the rest of the car is a good'un, when you fix the engine you have a car you know and can trust. Pitch that against wandering through the murky fields of Autotrader. Hell, you might even end up going upmarket and getting one of those 4x4s that become 4x3s as soon as you get a puncture

Does it really need a recon or 2nd hand engine? I feel the need for a second opinion coming on. Others, clever than I, can help you with that if you can tell us why it is supposed to be needed. I merely suggest standing back and having a very serious thought about the wisdom of the alternatives. I admit I am biased based on my personal experience. Many moons ago I made a dreadful mistake. Convinced I had had enough of throwing money I didn't really have at the Model F Vauxhall Victor that had faithfully seen me through University, I abandoned it at a scrap yard and there followed a series of disasters that cost me a lot more money in the longer time, being the devils I didn't know.

Take a deep breath and tell us the whole story. This is not like any forum I know. It is full of wise and sympathetic people who will help and advise. There are also at least two mad (sorry: lateral thinking) Scotsman and the Dartmoor village idiot to keep it from getting pompous. :yahoo:

As eloquently put by the wise MikeD, you must not be hastificated into making a dreadful mistake in parting with a vehicle that is, to quote others hereon, pretty much bomb proof.

As asked by the similarly eloquent gentleman Davrav, WTF has occurred with thy steed, that would make thee part therewith so william nilliam? I have been on eBay on your behalfment....nothing much at present, but disheartened be ye not....I have renamed your Rav Stevie McAustin....we have the technology, we can rebuild him, and it won't cost 6 million dollars, man.

Best Regards,

Big Kev

Also sprach one of the Zarascotsman I referred to! I rust my case.

Nevertheless I sense a body of opinion building here.

I guess I'm the expert on here when it comes to engine swaps !! (really..... I'm quite humble !)

Assuming your old engine is completely knackered, then you will get about £260 a ton for cast iron, £600+ a ton for aluminium, and £220 a ton for scrap steel.

You can source good secondhand engines from scrap car merchants - what you are looking for is a straight replacement engine... ie one that is identical to yours so its just a straight swap.

There are a number of internet sites offering used engines which carry a guarantee for a couple of months - long enough to try it out.

The actal engine swap if done by a Jap car garage should be quite low - cos they are used to boy racers wrecking engines then just getting another swapped in.

I've had a number of engine replacements and have my 2 RAVs running the 3sgte racing engin e that Toyota created a wee while ago. This was a bit of a learning curve as very few RAVs have been treated to this - I think about 10 in the world that I know of.

So a straight engine swap is simple and quick. I'd be looking to pay maybe £500 for the engine then another £400-£500 to fit it..plus you then get the scrap value of your old engine back.

So its a welcome to the forum from me; and a lot of support from others. Come back and ask more questions - more than happy to help...if you'd been nearer I'd have offered to take the car to the guys I use for a swap as they are well knowledgeable!!!

If you do decide on scrapping, is it a 5 door - petrol or diesel?? Colour? (Sense a possible unbelievable bargain possible here !!) (don't tell ma wife)

hi guys, sadly been told by my garage that i need a new engine for my rav4, been told with fitting i'm looking at nearly 2k.

what i would like to know is any ideas what it should be worth to sell.

its 2002, auto in black, 4 brand new tyres, otherwise runs fine regular service history etc. i had it for 2 years and paid £4300, its around 75,000 miles.

any ideas whether this would even sell on here or ebay etc. or one of these companies that will just come out and pay to take it for parts etc.

any advice would be very much appreciated thankyou.

For my two pennorth, all the information/advice you are getting from Mike/Dav/Bothy is spot on. Have a word with: http://www.thorntonbreakers.co.uk I've no connection with the said company, but have been a satisfied customer on several occasions. Very helpful crowd.

If you decide not to fit a recon engine DON'T scrap it.

Break it for spares you will get a lot more than scrap price for it.

Personally though like the rest I would fit a recon engine in it :)

Cheer guys, thanks for your support an feedback.

To clarify I asked garage what was wrong with engine an they said - conrod sticking out of the block.

I am totally screwed for work, so may end up buying something this weekend an then deal with rav4 etc, get engine fixed an then sell one of em.

Good grief. What made that happen? I don't think that is a common Toyota weakness. Commiserations indeed.

What happened to your engine is what happened to my fathers on his celica. And no, he is not a racer. It happened apparently when a garage went to return it to us. Hmmmmmmmm

Anyway, insurance company at fault, too much to mention, but they paid up. Gutted, it was a lovely car too.
