Stop & Start - How Does Ot Work?

Hello,

I have had my new Auris TR 1.33 manual for a week now. Not matter how many times I try I cannot get this stop & start feature to work!

Excatly how does it work? Does the car have to run for a certain time before it works - or be stationary for longer than 5 mins.

Or is there a problem with my new car?

Any ideas

KEith

It varies on a lot of things

I find the car has to be warmed up before it will kick in... also the temperature outside cannot be too low. If your running power sapping things for example the heater, lights, air con etc it can also force the engine to stay on. In the summer months you will notice it cutting out a lot more which will be good!

Have you looked in the manual?

OK perhaps I did not explain..... got the new car drove home. Read manual....noticed the 'stop start' thought Oh whats that...drove around...stopped, started..stopped...started..nothing...

so how does it work? If you drive say 20 miles stopping & starting should it kick in..or does it only work after say 50 or 60 or more miles..

..or does my new car have a problem..

I had a look around inside a Yaris 1.33 (same engine with stop/start) once and noticed it has a button between the front seats which disables the stop/start system. I'm guessing there's a similar button to switch off the Auris stop/start system too. Maybe that's been triggered and therefore your stop/start system is off.

Conditions which can affect the stop/start include:

- the car is adequately warmed up

- the Battery is charged enough

- on climate control cars, the windscreen demister being used (which uses the air con to demist the inside of the windscreen)

- the air con being used when the external temperature is low

Are you using the climate control with the air conditioning turned on?

If the stop/start is turned off (using the 'eco off' switch to the left of the sterring column) the dashboard should display an 'eco off' warning light.

Did you read my links in post #3

Yes it should work... turn off the climate control/heater just to be sure it's not affecting anything and it should stop everytime you pull up and go into neutral with your foot totally off the clutch afer only half a mile or to warm up.

If it doesn't there's a problem.

The stop start is "on by default" and even if you manually press the button to turn off, the next time car is used it reverts back to on.

Also check as frosty mentions, whether the ECO light on the dash illuminates when you stop and what it says.

My switch is to the lower right near the mirror and headlight level controls.

All of the above will stop it from working, also, if you happen to touch the clutch pedal, it wont work either.

Thanks. I do have the de-mister on all the time, but turned it off and it still did not work. Then today just by chance it worked. So clearly there are times when no mater what you do it won't work - I am just happy there is no problem with the new car.

Thank you again.

I have seen a lot of customers who ride the clutch pedal ever so slightly, without noticing, it wont work if you are doing this, you only just have to be touching it

It's simple: turning the key doesn't start the car, it only starts once the clutch is pressed.

All issues with stop/start are clear. It wasn't starting because it's necessary to really press the clutch all the way down; when in neutral it stops when warm enough and is restarted by pressing clutch. Stop/start can be switched off by switching on the Eco button in middle of seats, then it behaves like a normal car.
