What Is Exhaust Manifold Converter

Hi there,

Can somebody explain, what is the EXHAUST MANIFOLD CONVERTER, what is used for and if blocked can it cause the car to exhaust black smoke. Is it possible to clean if it is cloged up?

I am enclosing a picture of what Mr.T send me. The part is hilighted.

The Catalytic Converter is an emmission control device installed in the exhaust system to convert harmful pollutants,sulphur dioxide, CO2 etc, into non-harmful exhaust gas. The cause of black smoke in diesel engines can be from many different things such as incorrect fuel/air mixture, inefficient ignition. burning engine oil,blocked EGR valve, but sometimes a good blast down the motorway will clean out everything.

There are two cats on the system, one is for Nitrous Oxide and the other is a Diesel Particulate Filter System converter. I'm not sure which is which.

Recently I have seen a Turbo Disiesl with gutted Cat Converter. Aparantly it has been stuck and the car has lost its power. After gutting the Cat Converter no matter how you revved the car there was absolutely no black smoke or any. How can this be possible. I thought that the Converter takes those unburnt Dieslel particles/black solid bits that we see through the exhaust.

The Cat Coverter is quite expensive part to replace and it seems to me a lot of garages offer this service of gutting the Cat, efectivly leaving you with the unit but nothing inside.

The question is, if that is done should it smoke more or less if that was the cause of black smoke in the first place?

The carbon particles are trapped until the car reaches a speed of 40 MPH plus and then they are burnt off. If the engine is not burning fuel efficiently or is burning oil, gutting the cat will not stop it. It will just emit the carbon into the atmosphere and fail its MOT.

Thanks Fitter,

I appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge with us. What I did not know was, that oil in the cilinders and burning it could produce black smoke, I allways thought the smoke would be blue.

I find your comment about the carbon particles being trapped until the car reaches 40MPH very usefull.

That might expain why when the wife use the car for short scholl runs, the car seems to got cloged up.

its not illegal to remove a cat from a car.some firms produce a stainlee steel pipe to replace the cat.i checked sometime ago with local mot garage.and having a cat or not is not part of the test.

as long as it passes emission test it ok. same applies with egr.

Can you remove the EGR completely ?

yes,but with earlier vacuum operated one there was no problem,you just blanked off the vacuum pipe.

but most cars now the egr is controlled electroncly so you have a permanent engine fault light showing if you remove it.

not nice.

I had blanked it off before, and did not get any error/warning lights come up. My original question was, if everything else is 100%, would the removal of the CAT make the car exhaust Blask Smoke?

no, but you may hear the turbo spinning faster,ive heared reported with some cars.if you no fault light up for the egr mod it cant be bad.

A couple of remarks if you allow:

- removing the cat is illegal

- blue smoke = burning oil

- black smoke = incorrect fuel/air mixture

- fiddling with the exhaust system will be detected by the ECU and may put the car into permanent limp mode

The Cat and EGR are there to reduce bad stuff being blasted into the environment.

And with the prevaling westerly winds, sooner or later I will have to inhale it here.

Please reconsider and have it checked properly. :!Removed!: :D

removing cat is not illegal says a garage local to me.

plus the firms who supply the parts to replace state on there website its not illegalto remove a cat or blankoff egr.

Why would someone try to remove the Cat or the Exhaust Manifold Converter ?

As the car ages those parts have certain life and they eventually fail. When they do fail, the car exhaust more bad stuff than when with them, as they effectively suffocate the engine causing it to smoke black stuff. Surely the best case scenario would have been buy new parts and at the price of £600 for the Exhaust Converter and £960 for the CAT, add the labour and - no thank you, espesially when money is tight. ! If it is not illigal to take off/blank and the car still passes the MOT, then why not ? The bottom line is it would produce less bad stuff than when with the blocked up CAT or Converter.

Surely everyone here has seen the car in front gushing a massive great black cloud and I remember thinking what a ****, he should not be allowed on the road. I was a witness of a Turbo Diesel with gutted CAT and I promise you if you had ear-plugs and can not hear the engine, no matter how you revved it, looking at the exhaust, you could not tell if the car is running or not. How much bad stuff comes out - I do not know, but passed MOT first time, and no favours from the MOT station ?

I think that the problem they are trying to solve is what to do when the cat is knackered. Due the high cost of replacement some people are not prepared to pay hundreds of pounds to fit a new one so they buy a de-cat pipe which fits where the cat was. This is just an empty pipe and costs a few pounds so it is cost effective, an older diesel car will pass a UK MOT test if it was just the old cat that was at fault as they only do a smoke test but new regulations coming in very soon would not allow this on cars registered from 2008, the same rule would apply to the EGR valve blanking plate.

i expect soon they will stop all mods on cars,beside lights and tuning boxes etc.

shame though as people like to make theirs indevidual to their taste.

Oh, smokey engines. Reminds me of a story one of my colleagues relayed to me about his younger years. He was responsible for a 4T bedford with a major smoke problem due for an inspection. His solution was to put a wooden block under the accelerator pedal, reducing the revs and the smoke. He made it pass. The audit team checked it and it failed the smoke test but he blagged his way out of trouble by bluffing 'What? You took a truck with a cold engine and rev'd the nuts off it? I took it round the range road to make sure it was properly warmed up before testing it. Who rev's a cold engine?' He got away with it, jammy git.

Hi,

The problem is, that people try to find ways to avoid (or postpone) expensive repairs to their car's exhaust systems when the onboard computer signals a malfunction with it.

The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve and Catalyst, combined with a couple of sensors and electronics, are there to comply with exhaust regulations and to protect the environment from polution for our children.
