Earthquake Tragedy

Just heard on BBC news that Toyota Japan has suspended all production at all its plants. I think delivery times will be longer for new Toyota cars. What a tragedy it will take some time for Japan to recover from this disaster.

Hi Chris

I have an MG friend out there who lives in Nagano, I had an email from him saying he and his wife were going to Tokyo in his just bought 1996 XJ6 Jaguar, last week,he did not say for how long,I have sent another email today, but as yet nothing, I do not know Japan but it appears his town is south west of Tokyo, so I hope he had left there before all this happened. It must be very bad trying to get from A to B.

After watching the reports of the damage on the news I'd say making cars is the last thing on their minds at the moment.

Very sad thing indeed. I remember Kobe vividly as it happened the day after I returned back to Holland from our Japan Office.

On a positive note, give it another month and it will be a good time to sell a nearly new 3rd gen prius :-)

The Tsutsumi plant is too far south to have been directly affected.

Sadly in the wake of the tragedy, I'm now thinking practicalities.

My cunning plan to order a factory spec Prius for delivery around 1 Sep in early April is now not so cunning.

I may now put the order in next week. As has been pointed out the factory is well south of the affected zone. Also, if history tells us anything, the Japanese are both well prepared and resilient in the face of disaster and I'm sure will want to get back to normal as soon as practicable. However, I'm guessing that there will be excessive demand in a month or so for replacement vehicles domestically once insurances have been sorted and automotive suppliers may have been affected causing shortages and bottlenecks.

Mine was due at at end of May based on the quoted eighteen week delivery time. If I hear anything to the contrary, I'll post the details.

I wouldn't want to give the impression I'm at all concerned about the likely delayed arrival of my new car. I fully respect the fact that Toyota - and Japan - have far more to worry about!!

Indeed and I feel the same way, Our car delivery dates are not that important when you consider what is happening over there.

Now it looks like Toyota's North American plants may shut down as well:

CNNMoney: Toyota tells U.S. plants 'prepare to shut down'

Toyota's U.S. manufacturing arm is preparing for a possible shutdown because of parts shortages from Japan, a Toyota spokesman said, according to CNNMoney.

Word has gone out to all 13 of Toyota's factories in the United States, Canada and Mexico. This does not mean that the plants will stop working, Toyota spokesman Mike Goss said, but that they should be ready in case the need arises.

The situation in Japan is very difficult, however, parts production has started up again, and in the UK, there are no expectations to have to shut any plants down. Toyota will keep the UK factories ticking over by not working any overtime etc, I imagine it will be the same info worldwide

Thailand has been producing the Prius since November last year, so I'm sure they have increased their production... If I understood the sales correctly, I can get my prius within a week from ordering unless it's white pearl...

Guess I will know by Monday, since I hope to finish those papers by then...
