I've been trying to remove the alternator on a MK2 (Rev 3). It has seized solid, and i need to remove it in order to strip down and repair. However, it seems very difficult to get at the nuts without removing the engine!! I can get in there, but the bottom nut is locked solid. I'm hoping that some WD40 will loosen the fella, however, can it be removed via the top of the engine? It seems pretty tight down there, and the alternator looks too big to pass through the gap. I can't believe this is an engine out job, but then this is an MR2 so I don't expect it to be simple.......

right, rear driver side wheel off long socket extension will go straight to the big 17 mm bolt. the other 12 and 13 mm ones should be easy. Then, get under the car or from the top corner and remove the bracket maybe 5 bolts can't remember but then you can juggle it about and lift the alternator out of the top rear driverside bit. i don't tink tubbys have anything else in the way.. If you don't remove the bracket you have to shuffle the alterator to the other side and get it past the wiring loom, really not worth the bother.

Cheers Mate, your a star! :) I was thinking I might have to remove the rear cross member. Fortunately this ones a UK N/A so much less stuff to get in the way than on my turbo.

Now all I've got to do is to get those damn doors opening again..... Being a stupid sod, I've completely forgotten that I can just remove the panel from My tubby and work out where all the linkage poins are. The workshop manual is ok, but it's not always crystal clear.

Well I've got to the bolt in question, it is seized solid, so a liberal spraying of WD40, and fingers crossed......
