Transmission Whine

My car is MY'00 and I am currently experiencing this. After googling, it appears that it is quite a common problem with these and not too serious.

Can anyone confirm the above?

I've not come across this as a common fault but if the gearbox oil is not renewed at the correct service interval (every 40k) then I wouldn't be surprised they'd be some whinning. What mileage has the Yaris got and has it a good service history with it?

Hi, it's at 47k miles and I've known the car since new, yet there is little service history. It had a brand new engine put in a couple of years ago due to oil starvation and that's the only major work I think it's ever had done.

This used buyers guide on the Autoexpress website seems to highlight it as a common problem:

GEARBOX: on the whole, the Yaris is a very refined little car. And although the gearboxes can whine, they do keep going. It’s unlikely that the transmission will fail altogether, yet the noise can be disconcerting because the rest of the motor is quiet.

I've also seen it referenced to on honestjohn.co.uk, but other than that, the car is driving perfectly fine. I don't have the money to do any work on the gearbox anyway so I'm just wondering can it become a serious issue?

sorry but you have got that wrong.

if you go on the toyota tec site, and look up service schedule for gearbox oils you will see that for NORMAL use the oil level is checked every 48 monthsl no need for a change.

for SEVERE use then the oil is changed every 48 months.

unless your in the habit of going across country there is no need to change it.

but no no harm in changing if it makes you happy.but you must you the correct spec of oil.

 Yes you're right, my apologies! I have just been out to both our cars to read the owners manuals re:gearbox oil and it is recommended as an additional 'inspection' at 40k not a 'replacement', but as you are inspecting it's not much harder to replace it which is what I had in mind when I did ours.

Maybe the inspections are getting missed at 40k/48 month service and some cars are suffering gearbox whine but like I said I have not come across this yet.

on my old passat, the gearbox was not mentioned at all on the services.the fitter was to examine the car for leaks during the inspection.if no signs of leaks then it could be assumed the level was ok.

dont say i agree with it though.

as to the whine, its would as you say pays to check/change the oil.and go from there.

the noise could be a wheel bearing.

Okay, thanks everyone for the replies so far. I'll probably go ahead and change the gearbox oil in the near future, although the car has very little mileage for its age (47k over eleven years).

What grade oil do people recommend for the job by the way? I've heard of someone using 75W90 but all I can find is 80W90 on the Halfords website.
