Hi Guys

I currently own an Auris T180 but my wife currently has a Yaris T Sport. She is looking to part X her yaris in and we have found a nice 2nd hand 1.8 SR yaris. Its 2008 and only done 20K. We are going to look at it on Saturday. Is there aything we should look out for? Also are you guys aware of any issues with this model?

Thanks

Carl

I haven't any personal experience of the 1.8, but don't recall seeing any major issues on this forum.

The 1.8 is Japanese built and the other models come from France these days, so most of us are jealous because we'd prefer a Jap built car because of their perceived higher build quality and component reliability.

Apparantly if you sit a Jap car and a French car side by side, you can spot lots of little differences, but unless you have them side by side its difficult to tell apart from the obvious 1.8SR differences such as front & rear bumpers.

It would be a good game to play though....

Most of the debate on the forum is around performance - the 1.8 is meant to have more bhp but seems slower and people try to work out why that is.... Logic says that it must be down to weight differences and different gearing but there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer...

The T-Sport community have concluded that they have the fastest and "best" Yaris model and the 1.8SR people just get on with enjoying their cars for what they are.

Check for rattles, the hard ride causes the dash to come loose and rattle like mad, the glass in my doors rattles too.

I really enjoyed mine, especially on open road. Harder work in city traffic but still good fun. As other poster said, it is Japanese built so no quality issues. Mine didn't rattle but it is quite a firm ride. I found the grip superb and my nerve went before the car did.

Nothing really to watch out for, the only downside is the steering lock or rather the lack of it. If you need to put it in a tight space you won't find it easy. Had to pull across the road to reverse into my gateway, couldn't get in from near kerb. Think some people thought I was challenged in the steering department ! That to me is the only bug bear.

The boot floor should be taken out and stored, that way you get the room you need.

The smart entry and start is wonderful but the keyfob batteries don't seem to last much more than 6 months.

Some people reckon if you drive it hard you only get 8000 miles out of the front tyres. Mine has new Yokohamas when I got it at 13,000 miles but they still had plenty of tread when I traded it in 10,000 miles later so they aren't that bad.

Traded mine in at dealer in Macclesfield who put it up for very reasonable price - wonder who is driving it now. Might see it round your way !

I've had mine for 2 years now and no complaints. Very spacious and practical, regularly does 34-38 mpg (mainly town driving), on a run managed 46mpg. Performance wise doesn't feel like 131 bhp like many have already said but all in all a good car, and looks different from the other Yari with subtle differences like rear LEDs, front bumper, alloys etc.

I changed the front Yokohamas after 16000 miles, and have Kumhos now which seem grippier, especially in the wet.

Definitely a good price, I paid £5990 for our 08 1.3TR in Nov 2010 which I thought was a good price. I guess not from a Toytota dealer though?

Very cheap, I bought mine 6 months ago for £7500 (after knocking them down from £8000) and mine is an '07 with 14,000 miles on it.
