Rav4 1996 No Power At Low Revs, Sticky Throttle

Hi,

I have a recently discovered problem on my 96 Rav4 3dr ( approx 65,000 miles ). FSH.

At speeds under 30 mph the car behaves fine, there is no great accelaration power, but not unreasonable. But the car then literally crawls above that speed, it will get to 60mph eventually, but the throttle is just not responsive.

However, if i force the throttle to the floor, the engine will open up and the revs run fine and it will speed up normally.

I have changed the distributor cap and rotor arm and spark plugs and tightened the throttle cable.

What is the name of the part that is likely to be failing to cause this lumpy mid range driving ?

Also, where is it safe to jack the car up as i want to put it on axle stands whilst i do some rust prevention.

Cheers

Mark

Do I remember something about the throttle body needing cleaned???

On the axle stands..... you can use the mounting point at the front of the rear trailing arms thingy, but don't use the petrol tank!

Up front you have the sub frame assembly to choose from.

If you are doing rust prevention, its worth taking the plastic cover off the petrol fill and breather pipes in the rear nearside wheel well and inspecting the pipes, and give the area a good clean. Other areas I found were the channels below the passenger footwell (accessed fro the footwell I think) ; inside the wheel arch lips; the rear suspension arms; and have a look at the petrol tank and pipes too.

Other bits will be around the seat mounting points and belt mountings (ie those you can see without pulling out the tank).
