Avensis 2Ltr D4D Power

Hi all

I recently bought a 57 D4d 2 ltr avensis after a week i noticed there was very little power so i took it into a garage to have fixed, it turned out to be a faulty sensor that told the ecu that the brakes were applied thus the ecu wasnt giving any power, I've now had that fixed however since i've only had the car a week i carnt remember what it was like when i took it for a test drive, since coming out of the garage i've taken it on the motorway and the average mpg never went above 45 and in the upper gears there still doesnt seem to be alot of power

so my question is to anyone that has one of these cars is

Does the car normally feel this underpowered and seem to be getting so little mpg or does people think like me and that there is still something wrong?

Any helps would really be appreciated

Have you checked simple things like the Air Filter? when was it last changed, is it blocked? Fuel Filter? not so simple like EGR Valve?

Mine's a 2010 2.0D4D, I have only got 6k on the clock at the moment but cruising at a sensible limit I only get 43 - 44MPG, and 6th gear is more of an overdrive so it does feel under powered in 6th but is fine through the gears, it feels much stronger than the quoted 126 ish odd BHP.

I've put a new k&n panel air filter in when i got it not done fuel filter as not sure and not sure what the egr valve is?

Is your 43 44 mpg motorway driving?

I thought 126 BHP was quiet alot or is that pretty low for this size car?

I am getting around 43 to gallon at moment and that is doing round trip of 25 miles a day on country and B roads, last June driving in France I was getting around mid 50's on the superb auto routes.

Mine feels very powerful for a 2 litre diesel.

2009 model (new shape) 2.0 diesel T4.

54.4mpg overall based on fuel receipts since new. The on board computer is consistently 1.5mpg low compared with that. Large variation summer to winter. Worst one off fill up 44mpg, best 70mpg (must have been a fluke)!!!

Has you on board computer mpg been reset since you got the car?

Plenty of power for normal road use (has anyone ever put this engine on a dyno?).

Thats on the motorway (43/44MPG), but mine has a DPF (2011 Model Year) to meet euroIV emissions which I am certain is hurting the economy. 126bhp is nothing special, my old Fabia vRS had a PD130 TDi engine in it, and made 143bhp stock (1.9 Pumpe Duse 8valve motor,)and 172BHP with a custom remap and a couple of other tweaks. Power delivery is very linear in the 2010's which I like, and cruising at 80mph in 6th is really relaxing, can hardly hear the engine.

Mine has been on a rolling road, but to be honest you could make it read as much or as little BHP as you wanted so should only really be used to compare before and after figures when doing some tweaking. Mine made 137bhp and feels as strong as my mates PD140 Octavia, his power delivery is Bang ... and a real slap in the back, the Avensis is smoother and linear.

I am hoping that MPG improves as it gets more miles under it's belt and it's first service done.

EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve, do a search for EGR mate and you will find plenty of posts about it, and how to go about cleaning it.

Not to sure on the Avensis, but on most cars you can "reset" the learning ECU by disconnecting the Battery for a few hours, then going for a drive and letting the ECU "learn" or adapt to your driving style.

One day I hope someone makes a DPF delete kit for the Avensis, I won't hold my breath though :)

My RAV4 will get no less than 43MPG and can better 58 MPG taken easy.....

So do people think i should bring it back for looking at due to the mpg and power or do we think thats how it should be?

Difficult to advise you really what may seem underpowered to you may not to someone else, personally I would take to a main dealer to advise you as they would know straight away if there is a problem.

Your MPG should increase as the weather warms up, I can see mine increasing again since the weather got slightly warmer but is still down on summer readings.

K&N panel filters have been associated with killing MAF's for years due to excess oil on the gauze.

I would suggest cleaning the MAF sensor and blotting any oil that the filter has on it.

Maybe even put the paper filter back in to compare.
