What Tires To Choose

I am going to change my 16" with 17" 225/45/17 91W next week and I do not know what tire should I choose. Barum Bravuris is about 85euro/ piece and the most expensive is Michelin PS3 at 130 euro. List includes Conti Sport Contact 3, Falken 912.

Here is a teaser.

I'm due a tyre change at the end of the month too, and i have short listed 3 tyres, but have yet to decide on one above the rest yet.

Toyo Proxes T1 R ~ Had them in the past and they are excellent and pretty good value for money.

Bridgestone S001 ~ Found them online for a good price, and after doing some research i have found that some very quick cars have them fitted at the factory (Audi S5, Lexus LFA among others) so they should be plenty good enough for my Auris.

Michelin Pilot Sport 3 ~ Got decent reviews for having decent amounts of grip with a decent wear rate, and claims of improved MPG.

At the moment i'm very tempted with the Bridgestones as they are premium tyres, but not a huge amount dearer than the Toyo's which are mid range, but very good from past experience.

Barum makes quite cheap tyres and you can find some good models but don't expect to much from them. Michelin are good but in my opinion they are really not worth the price. You can get cheaper tyres with the same or better performance. IMO Toyo Proxes are very good value for money (T1R or CF1) or German made Fulda or Conti -bit more expensive.

I've foound Toyo Proxes T1R 225/45/17 but the wheight is 94 instead of 91. Do you find this an inconveninence? Should I find 91 or will the 94 work just as fine?

What about Yokohama S drive AS01? Are they any good?

I had a Mazda 6 and it was very noisy.

So I first tried Goodyear F1 GSD3's and they had some improvement on the Brigestones that are the Mazda standard.

I next tried Falken 452 and they were a vavst improvement on the F!'s. My lst experiment was on with the Proxes T1R and this was the best. Wheels were 17 inch and tyres were 225/45.

But I found the Auris extremely quiet on the Dunlop sports that it has all round on 16 inch wheels. More rubber I guess than the 17.

Tyre selection is defferent for all cars. One cannot compare the performance of a specific tyre on a specific car and expect to get similar performance on a totally different car. We need to use each other's experiences on our cars to make the best selection.

But I guess we all know that anyway.

Well just a week ago I have changed my tyres on my auris.

Used to have the dunlops which I found that they were spoiling the ride of the car as well being very noisy especially in rough surfaces.

Since I was always having Michelin tyres on all my cars i fit a brand new set of ps3.

In a way its like I am driving a different car. The noise has been reduced a lot and the ride its more compliant know ( I do not feel any bumps of the road)

So I could suggest that tyres to anyone who is looking to change his tyres.

The only downside is that they are pretty expensive but i believe that they worth it and do not forget that its not a good idea not having good tyres on your car since that the tyres its the only think that connects a car with the road. Safety first.

My Auris came with 16" 205/55 Dunlop Sp Sport 01 which suck. There is a lot of road noise and the ABS comes on quite often when braking in the dry. I find that very bad. I've had Falken 452 before and liked them a lot.

I know the Michelin PS3 are very good but unfortunately are too expensive for me.

I've always said the Dunlops are too noisy and pretty pathetic all round.

I've decided on Bridgestones for my car. With cashback using quidco, i can have two fitted for £195.

I have these tires fitted, they are very good, quiet, excellent grip on wet and dry roads, but very bad on icy/snow conditions...

No such thing I am afraid. If you need tyres to drive on snow/Ice then winter tyres. No summer tyres will give you good grip on snow or ice.

I've been reading a lot regarding tyres, since my last post and learned that last year Auto Motor und Sport did a test for the 225/45/R17 ( the size I need) and the winner was Hankook K107 Ventus S1 Evo ( wooo long name) and found them at 400 euro for the set. What do you guys think?

In the end money ( ahhhm wife) made my choice so I went for the Barum Bravuris 2 as "We are not racing car drivers" :censor: maybe not her :toast:

This is how it looks with the MAK Iguan 8Jx17 inch with 225/45/ZR17

To be honest the dry grip and stability are very good. My only complaint would be the noise they make at speeds over 60mph( 100kmh). I haven't tested them in the dry but when I get a chance I will post my opinion.

I also have a question: has anyone fitted 15" steel wheels to Auris 1.6? Do they fit?

I didn't try, but they'll fit. You can put 15" on Auris or Corolla sedan with 1.4 petrol or diesel , 1.3 , 1.6 and 1.8 petrol ; on 2.0 and 2.2 diesels , 15" rims can not be fitted due to the size of calipers ...

I had 2 Avon ZZ3 fitted on the front last week, definitely quieter that the original fitment Michelin, no complaints so far, £90 each fitted.

I get my Bridgestones fitted next saturday. £205 fitted, minus 7% cashback and with a free tyre garauntee.

I'm happy with that for a premium tyre. :)
