I have an 1998 avensis 1.8gs hatchback and the econolight is no longer working, is it easy to find out why and to fix the problem.

Very easy Stu. I changed mine a while back.

The bulb has blown. It is a standard r509 bulbs.

Philips screw driver to remove 2 screws holding instrument surround. You may have to lower the steering wheel to assist removal of the surround. If I remember, I had to pull the top of the surround toward me, rotating it then lift the lower part up and away.

The 3 screws holding the instument panel to the facia.

If you can angle the instrument panel to get to the bulb without disconnecting the instument panel, you can then replace bulb.

Installation is reversal of removal.

You probably use the Econ light like me, and miss this useful guide since the bulb blew.

One time I spoke to a fellow Avensis owner with the same engine as ours 1.8 leanburn, and he was not aware of the Econ light and was not bothered.

Anyway you should be sorted.
